Mojave 3 were a British rock band formed in 1995 by Neil Halstead, Rachel Goswell, and Ian McCutcheon, three former members of the influential Reading band Slowdive. After Slowdive were dropped by Creation Records, the musicians chose to move away from the dense, guitar-driven shoegaze of their former group. Their new project favored acoustic instruments, spacious arrangements, and a more direct songwriting style shaped by folk, country rock, dream pop, and alternative rock.
The group initially recorded under the name Mojave, but added the number 3 after discovering that another band was already using the name. Their first recordings were made quickly and with relatively few overdubs, giving the music an intimate and unpolished character. Released by 4AD in 1995, Ask Me Tomorrow introduced a band that sounded almost deliberately unlike late-period Slowdive. The album's quiet tempos, melancholy melodies, and understated performances drew comparisons with artists such as Mazzy Star and the Cowboy Junkies, while Halstead's songs established the reflective, conversational tone that would remain central to the band's work.
Mojave 3 expanded after the debut, with former Chapterhouse guitarist Simon Rowe joining the lineup and Alan Forrester contributing keyboards. This broader arrangement was evident on Out of Tune, released in 1998. The album retained the group's subdued atmosphere but added fuller instrumentation and a stronger rhythmic presence. Songs such as "Who Do You Love" and "Some Kinda Angel" showed Halstead developing into a more confident and classicist songwriter, while Goswell's vocals added a contrasting softness to the band's otherwise restrained sound.
Excuses for Travellers followed in 2000 and is often regarded as one of Mojave 3's defining albums. Its blend of folk-rock, gentle country influence, and dream-pop textures brought the band a wider audience without sacrificing its low-key character. "My Life in Art" and "Running with Your Eyes Closed" exemplified the group's ability to make emotionally weighty songs sound casual and spacious. The album also reflected Mojave 3's gradual shift from a reaction against Slowdive into a distinct musical identity of its own.
The band continued with Spoon and Rafter in 2003, an album recorded over an extended period at the group's studio in Cornwall. Three years later, Puzzles Like You marked a notable change in approach. It introduced a more upbeat, pop-oriented sound, with brighter arrangements and more forward momentum than on the earlier records. Even so, the album preserved the melodic melancholy and understated vocal style associated with Mojave 3.
Mojave 3 entered a period of inactivity after the mid-2000s, returning to the stage for selected performances in 2011. Halstead and Goswell later resumed work with Slowdive, whose reunion became their principal focus. Mojave 3's catalog nevertheless remained important to listeners interested in the quieter, folk-influenced side of the 1990s alternative scene. In 2026, 4AD issued remastered editions of the band's five studio albums and collected them in a limited box set, renewing attention on a group whose music connected shoegaze's atmosphere with the plainspoken traditions of folk and country songwriting.
