Biography

Eddie Vedder (born Edward Louis Severson III on December 23, 1964) is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist best known as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist of Pearl Jam. With his powerful baritone, highly expressive stage presence, and socially conscious songwriting, Vedder became one of the defining voices of the Seattle rock movement of the early 1990s.

Raised primarily in the Chicago area and later in Southern California, Vedder developed his musical identity in San Diego. He performed with several local groups before joining Bad Radio, a progressive rock band that gave him valuable experience as a singer and frontman. In 1990, he sent a recording to guitarist Stone Gossard, who was assembling a new band after the breakup of Mother Love Bone. Vedder was invited to Seattle, where he joined Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament, guitarist Mike McCready, and drummer Dave Krusen in the group that became Pearl Jam.

Pearl Jam's 1991 debut album, Ten, established Vedder as a major figure in alternative rock. Songs such as "Alive," "Even Flow," and "Jeremy" combined hard-edged guitar music with lyrics addressing alienation, trauma, identity, and emotional survival. Vedder's intense vocal delivery helped give the band's music a dramatic force, while his willingness to challenge the music business distinguished Pearl Jam from many of its contemporaries. The albums Vs. (1993) and Vitalogy (1994) continued the band's success while presenting a more confrontational and experimental sound.

Before Pearl Jam's debut, Vedder also contributed vocals to Temple of the Dog, a Seattle supergroup formed in tribute to Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood. His participation on "Hunger Strike," performed as a duet with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, became one of the best-known recordings associated with the early Seattle scene.

Vedder's work outside Pearl Jam has included collaborations, soundtrack performances, and film appearances. He had a small acting role in the 1992 film Singles, which featured several members of the Seattle music community. His most substantial solo project was the soundtrack for Sean Penn's 2007 film Into the Wild. Vedder wrote and performed most of the album, using spare acoustic arrangements and folk-influenced melodies to complement the film's themes of travel, independence, and isolation. The song "Guaranteed" won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.

He expanded his solo sound on Ukulele Songs (2011), an intimate collection built around the ukulele, and later released Earthling (2022), a broader rock record featuring contributions from musicians including Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Ringo Starr. His solo concerts have often emphasized acoustic performance, audience interaction, and support for charitable causes.

As Pearl Jam's frontman, Vedder has remained central to the band's evolving identity, contributing vocals, guitar, lyrics, and an increasingly varied range of instruments. His political and humanitarian concerns have frequently appeared in his public statements, benefit performances, and songwriting, although his most enduring influence comes from the direct emotional connection of his voice and lyrics. Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, recognizing Vedder's role in one of the most important and durable rock bands of his generation.
