Biography

Sara Beth Bareilles (born December 7, 1979) is an American singer, songwriter, pianist, composer, and actress whose career has moved between pop music, musical theater, television, and live performance. Known for an expressive voice and piano-centered songwriting, she combines accessible pop melodies with lyrics about independence, vulnerability, self-doubt, and personal resilience.

Bareilles was born in Eureka, California, and studied communication at the University of California, Los Angeles. While at UCLA, she performed with the university's a cappella group Awaken A Cappella and began building experience in Los Angeles clubs and coffeehouses. She independently released her debut album, Careful Confessions, in 2004. The record established the melodic and confessional style that would become central to her work, although her wider breakthrough came after she signed with Epic Records.

Her major-label debut, Little Voice, was released in 2007. The album brought together polished pop production and the directness of Bareilles' earlier songwriting. Its lead single, "Love Song," became an international hit and reached the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. Rather than presenting romance in conventional terms, the song used a sharp, self-aware perspective to reject pressure from the music business and from romantic expectations. Its success earned Bareilles Grammy Award nominations for Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Bareilles followed with Kaleidoscope Heart in 2010. Led by "King of Anything," the album broadened her sound while retaining her emphasis on strong vocal melodies and piano-driven arrangements. Her next release, The Blessed Unrest (2013), became one of her most acclaimed albums. The single "Brave" developed into an anthem of self-expression and encouragement, while songs such as "I Choose You" and "Gravity" demonstrated her ability to balance mainstream songwriting with emotional complexity. The Blessed Unrest received a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.

Her growing interest in theatrical writing led to one of the most important turns in her career. Bareilles composed the music and wrote the lyrics for Waitress, a Broadway musical based on the 2007 film. The production opened in 2016, with Bareilles' score contributing an intimate, contemporary pop sound to the story. She released What's Inside: Songs from Waitress in 2015, recording several songs from the show herself. She later performed the role of Jenna in Broadway and West End engagements. The musical brought her Tony and Grammy nominations, and its cast recording helped establish her as a significant contemporary composer for the stage.

Bareilles' sixth studio album, Amidst the Chaos, appeared in 2019. Its songs addressed political division, social responsibility, friendship, and perseverance. "Saint Honesty" earned her the Grammy Award for Best American Roots Performance in 2020. She also contributed music to the Broadway musical The SpongeBob SquarePants Musical and co-hosted the 72nd Tony Awards with Josh Groban in 2018.

As a performer, Bareilles expanded into screen and television work. She played Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, receiving a Primetime Emmy nomination. She later starred as Dawn Solano in the musical comedy series Girls5eva, which premiered in 2021 and continued after its move from Peacock to Netflix. Bareilles also appeared in the television series Little Voice, serving as a creative force behind its music.

In 2022, she joined the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods as the Baker's Wife. The production's cast recording won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. Across her work, Bareilles has maintained a distinctive identity as both a recording artist and a writer: her pop songs rely on personal candor, while her theatrical projects show an increasing command of character, narrative, and ensemble storytelling.
