Biography

The New Pornographers are a Canadian indie rock band formed in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1997. Built around a rotating cast of established musicians and singer-songwriters, the group became one of the defining acts of the early-2000s indie rock movement. Their music combines power pop, folk rock, classic pop, and post-punk textures with dense arrangements, bright melodies, and layered vocal harmonies.

The band was founded by Carl Newman, formerly of the Vancouver group Zumpano. The original lineup also included singer Neko Case, Destroyer songwriter Dan Bejar, bassist John Collins, drummer Kurt Dahle, keyboardist Blaine Thurier, and guitarist Fisher Rose. Most of the members were already active in Vancouver's independent music community, and the New Pornographers initially functioned as a collaborative project rather than a conventional full-time band. Their name was chosen by Newman after the Japanese film *The Pornographers*, while also echoing a phrase associated with the history of rock and roll.

The New Pornographers made their recorded debut with *Mass Romantic* in 2000. The album introduced the band's characteristic contrast between Newman's tightly constructed pop songs, Case's powerful and expressive vocals, and Bejar's more oblique compositions. Tracks such as "Letter from an Occupant" helped establish the group as a major new presence in North American indie music. Although the members maintained separate careers, the album's success gave the project a distinct identity of its own.

As Case's solo career developed and Bejar increasingly concentrated on Destroyer, the New Pornographers evolved into a more flexible ensemble. Kathryn Calder joined the touring lineup in the mid-2000s and became an important vocalist and songwriter within the band. On *Challengers* (2007), the group moved toward a more spacious and contemplative sound, emphasizing vocal interplay and mood as much as sheer momentum.

The band continued to refine its style on *Together* (2010), *Brill Bruisers* (2014), *Whiteout Conditions* (2017), and *In the Morse Code of Brake Lights* (2019). These records retained the group's gift for elaborate pop construction while reflecting Newman's increasingly central role as its principal songwriter. *Continue as a Guest* arrived in 2023 and extended that later-period approach with polished arrangements and a more mature lyrical perspective.

The New Pornographers' tenth studio album, *The Former Site Of*, was released by Merge Records on March 27, 2026. Produced by Newman, the album presents a darker and more reflective variation on the band's established sound. Across nearly three decades, the group has remained notable not only for its individual members but for the way their different musical personalities have repeatedly produced a coherent and recognizable collective style.
