Estrella Morente (born Estrella de la Aurora Morente Carbonell on August 14, 1980) is a Spanish flamenco singer from Las Gabias, in the province of Granada. The daughter of the influential cantaor Enrique Morente and dancer Aurora Carbonell, she grew up in one of the most important artistic families of modern flamenco. Her work combines respect for traditional cante with an openness to popular song, classical music, jazz, tango, rock and contemporary crossover.
Morente began singing at an early age. She performed publicly as a child and sang with guitarist Sabicas when she was seven. At sixteen, she appeared at the presentation gala for the Alpine Ski World Championships in Sierra Nevada. She also took part in her father's groundbreaking projects, including the album Omega (1996), an important meeting point between flamenco, rock and poetry. Her early artistic environment connected her with both the older flamenco tradition and the experimental direction associated with Enrique Morente.
Her solo recording career began with Mi Cante y un Poema in 2001. Produced with the involvement of her father, the album presented a young singer with a powerful, emotionally direct voice and a firm command of traditional forms. It became a major success, achieving platinum status in Spain and earning her the Ondas Award for Best Flamenco Creation. Later that year, she released Calle del Aire, a more varied collection that included popular songs and Christmas material. The album reached gold status and established Morente as one of the leading voices of her generation.
In 2006, Morente released Mujeres, a tribute to historic female flamenco singers. The album looked back to figures such as La Nina de los Peines while allowing Morente to develop her own contemporary style. It won the Spanish Music Award for Best Flamenco Album and received a Latin Grammy nomination. The project was followed by the concert film and documentary Casacueva y Escenario, which emphasized the dramatic force of her live performances.
Morente also became widely known beyond the flamenco audience through film. She sang "Volver" for Pedro Almodovar's 2006 film of the same name, contributing to one of the best-known musical moments in contemporary Spanish cinema. She later appeared or contributed vocally to projects connected with directors including Fernando Trueba and Carlos Saura, among them Iberia, Flamenco Flamenco and Buñuel y la Mesa del Rey Salomon. Her voice has also featured in work by artists such as Paco de Lucia, Pat Metheny and Bebo Valdes.
Her later albums show a continuing interest in expanding flamenco without abandoning its foundations. Autorretrato (2012) explored her musical identity, while Amar en Paz (2014), recorded with guitarist Nino Josele, drew on Spanish and Latin American song. She collaborated with pianist Javier Perianes on Encuentro (2016), a project centered on music by Manuel de Falla and Federico Garcia Lorca, and turned to the Spanish copla tradition on Copla (2019). In 2024, she recorded Estrella & Rafael with guitarist Rafael Riqueni.
Recognized with honors including the Medal of Andalusia and the Golden Microphone, Morente has built a career defined by vocal intensity, theatrical presence and a dialogue between inherited tradition and musical exploration.
