Alain Clark (born June 4, 1979, in Haarlem, Netherlands) is a Dutch singer, songwriter, guitarist, composer, and record producer. His music combines pop songwriting with soul, R&B, and elements of Motown-inspired production. Known for his warm voice, rhythmic arrangements, and hands-on studio work, Clark has built a career that moves between mainstream Dutch pop and more traditionally rooted soul.
Clark grew up in Zandvoort in a musical environment. His father, Dane Clark, was a soul singer and a member of the band Dane and the Dukes of Soul. Alain began making music at an early age and initially wrote and performed in Dutch. He later changed to English-language songwriting, a decision that helped define the sound of his breakthrough period.
At the beginning of the 2000s, Clark spent several years in Los Angeles attempting to establish himself as a singer and songwriter. Although the venture did not immediately result in a recording contract, the experience expanded his musical network and strengthened his interest in arranging and production. After returning to the Netherlands, he worked in Amsterdam on his first album and also contributed to projects by other performers. His credits from this period include work connected with artists such as Boris, Ali B, Jamai, and Jim.
Clark's self-titled debut album was released in 2004. It produced the singles "Heerlijk," "Vrij," and "Ringtone," and introduced him as a self-sufficient artist who wrote, performed, and produced much of his own material. The album also earned him the Zilveren Harp, a Dutch award recognizing promising musical talent.
His major breakthrough came with Live It Out in 2007, his first full-length album recorded primarily in English. Built around a polished but organic soul sound, the album featured contributions from renowned drummer Steve Gadd and drew on Clark's interest in classic rhythm and blues. Live It Out reached number two on the Dutch album chart, achieved double-platinum status, and remained in the charts for an extended period.
The album's best-known song, "Father & Friend," was recorded as a duet with Dane Clark. Its conversational father-and-son theme and understated soul arrangement made it one of Alain Clark's signature songs. The single reached number two in the Netherlands and brought him wider attention outside his home country. Other successful tracks from the album included "This Ain't Gonna Work," "Blow Me Away," and "Fell in Love." In 2009, Clark received an Edison Award as Best Male Artist.
Clark continued his album career with Colorblind in 2010, which topped the Dutch album chart. The record maintained his pop-soul identity while presenting a broader and more contemporary production style. It was followed by the live album Live with the Metropole Orchestra in 2011, Generation Love Revival in 2012, and Walk with Me in 2014. He also wrote and performed "Foxy Lady," the title song for the Dutch film Gooische Vrouwen.
Later releases include Bad Therapy (2017), recorded between Amsterdam and Los Angeles and incorporating more electronic textures, and Sunday Afternoon (2020). Alongside his solo work, Clark has remained active as a composer, arranger, and producer, collaborating with performers including Trijntje Oosterhuis, Guus Meeuwis, Maan, Diane Birch, and Avery Sunshine. His career is distinguished by a consistent emphasis on musicianship, self-production, and the meeting point between accessible pop and classic soul.
