Skye Alexandra Sweetnam (born May 5, 1988) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, actress, and music video director from Bolton, Ontario. She began singing and dancing as a child and started writing songs in her early teens. A demo recorded with help from a local music school brought her to the attention of Canadian music industry figures, leading to a partnership with producer and multi-instrumentalist James Robertson.
Sweetnam first attracted wider attention with "Billy S.," a lively pop-rock song released in 2003 on the soundtrack to the film How to Deal. The single introduced the sharp, youthful attitude that would define much of her early material and reached number 15 on the Canadian singles chart. Its music video, which combined handheld-camera imagery with scenes from the film, helped establish her visual identity as an energetic and self-aware performer.
Her debut album, Noise from the Basement, followed in 2004 through Capitol Records and EMI. Built around guitar-driven pop, punk influences, and candid teenage songwriting, the record included "Tangled Up in Me," "Number One," "Split Personality," and "Billy S." Although Sweetnam was frequently compared with fellow Canadian artist Avril Lavigne, her material generally emphasized a more playful, theatrical, and deliberately pop-oriented approach. Noise from the Basement reached number 124 on the Billboard 200 and performed particularly well in Japan, where it reached the top 15 of the Oricon album chart.
The album's success gave Sweetnam an international platform while she was still a teenager. In 2004, she toured North America and Europe as the opening act for Britney Spears on the Onyx Hotel Tour. She also became a familiar voice on television, contributing theme songs to programs including Radio Free Roscoe, The Buzz on Maggie, and Wayside. Her work extended into animation and family entertainment: she recorded a version of "Part of Your World" for Disney compilation albums and provided Barbie's singing voice in The Barbie Diaries (2006), performing several songs for the film's soundtrack. In the same period, she received a Juno Award nomination for New Artist of the Year.
Sweetnam's second solo album, Sound Soldier, was released in 2007. It retained her pop-rock foundation but introduced a more polished and electronic production style. The album produced "Human," "Music Is My Boyfriend," and "Babydoll Gone Wrong." She also collaborated with Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong on "Into Action," later reworking the song as "(Let's Get Movin') Into Action." Sweetnam directed the videos for "Music Is My Boyfriend" and "Babydoll Gone Wrong," adding filmmaking to her creative work. "Human" was nominated for a MuchMusic Video Award for Best Cinematography.
After her solo releases, Sweetnam moved toward heavier music. She formed the Toronto-based alternative metal and punk band Sumo Cyco in 2009 and adopted the stage name Sever. The band made its live debut in 2011 and released Lost in Cyco City in 2014, followed by Opus Mar in 2017 and Initiation in 2021. With Sumo Cyco, Sweetnam developed a more aggressive vocal style and a theatrical performance persona, while continuing her interest in elaborate, often horror-influenced music videos. Her career therefore spans two distinct but connected phases: the bright, rebellious pop-rock of her teenage solo work and the heavier, more visually expansive sound of her later life as Sever.
