Biography

Kristina Bach is the stage name of German singer, songwriter, lyricist, and music producer Kerstin Brauer. Born on April 7, 1962, in Mettmann, North Rhine-Westphalia, she became one of the most durable figures in modern German schlager. Her career has combined the direct emotional appeal of schlager with dance-pop production, discofox rhythms, and a strong emphasis on songwriting.

Bach developed her musical interests early. As a teenager, she won a talent competition and subsequently trained in singing and dance. She also studied piano and guitar and took acting lessons, experiences that later helped her work as both a recording artist and television performer. Before establishing herself as a singer, she appeared as a presenter on television productions.

Her recording career began in the early 1980s. Her first single, "Donna Maria," was released in 1983, and she scored her first notable success the following year with "Heisser Sand," a new version of the song previously associated with Italian singer Mina. Further appearances on radio and television during the second half of the decade established Bach as a recognizable voice in German popular music.

The decisive turning point came in 1990 with "Erst ein Cappuccino." The song became her breakthrough hit and placed her among the leading female performers in the schlager field. Bach's vocal ability, often described as spanning three and a half octaves, gave her performances a range that distinguished them from more conventional schlager recordings. She went on to win the Deutsche Schlagerparade six times in succession, an achievement that became one of the defining statistical markers of her career.

Bach also explored music beyond traditional schlager. In 1993, she recorded a dance-oriented version of the theme from the musical "The Phantom of the Opera," which gained attention on international dance charts and reached the Top 20 of the US Billboard dance listings. In 1997, she recorded "Gib' nicht auf" with Drafi Deutscher, adding a duet with one of Germany's established pop and schlager personalities to her catalog.

From the 1990s onward, Bach increasingly became known as a creative force behind other performers. She helped launch Michelle's career and wrote and produced songs for artists including Andrea Berg, Stefanie Hertel, Hansi Hinterseer, Mireille Mathieu, Helene Fischer, and Jeanette Biedermann. Her work with Biedermann was particularly successful, producing a series of charting singles. Bach's role in the German music business consequently expanded from performer to songwriter, producer, mentor, and label executive.

Her best-known composition for another artist is "Atemlos durch die Nacht," written for Helene Fischer and released in 2013. Fischer's recording became a defining hit of contemporary German pop and schlager, while Bach later recorded an English-language version, "Take a Breath," for her own repertoire. The song demonstrated Bach's ability to write material that could move beyond the established boundaries of German schlager.

Bach's own albums continued to reflect her broad musical interests. Releases such as "Tour d'Amour," "Tagebuch einer Chaos-Queen," and "Leben ist Liebe!" combine romantic ballads with dance production and more playful, outspoken material. She has also operated her own Bach Music Group, using it to develop and promote emerging acts. Across her career, Kristina Bach has remained notable not only for her voice and stage presence but also for the breadth of her contribution to German popular music as an author and producer.
