Nathaniel Thomas Wilson (born July 20, 1968), known professionally as Kool G Rap, is an American rapper from Queens, New York. He emerged during hip-hop's golden age as one half of Kool G Rap & DJ Polo and became a central figure in the Juice Crew, the influential collective associated with producer Marley Marl. With his intricate rhyme patterns, cinematic storytelling, and hard-edged subject matter, Kool G Rap helped establish a template for East Coast hardcore and mafioso rap.
Kool G Rap began recording in the mid-1980s after Marley Marl gave him and DJ Polo an opportunity to make a demo. Their first notable release, "It's a Demo," introduced a partnership built on Polo's sample-heavy production and G Rap's densely packed verses. Further singles, including "Rikers Island" and "Poison," led to the duo's debut album, Road to the Riches, in 1989. The record combined battle rhymes, street narratives, and technically demanding flows, and it remains one of the defining albums of early New York hip-hop.
Kool G Rap and DJ Polo followed with Wanted: Dead or Alive in 1990 and Live and Let Die in 1992. Both albums expanded the duo's sound and presented a darker, more detailed view of urban life. Songs such as "Streets of New York" and "Ill Street Blues" demonstrated G Rap's skill as a narrator, while tracks such as "On the Run" and "Straight Jacket" emphasized his interest in crime films, organized crime imagery, and psychological tension. His contribution to Marley Marl's "The Symphony" also placed him among the most respected lyricists in the Juice Crew.
After parting ways with DJ Polo, Kool G Rap began a solo career with 4, 5, 6 in 1995. The album included "Fast Life," a collaboration with Nas, and showed that G Rap could adapt his detailed writing to a more polished mid-1990s sound without abandoning his severity or technical control. Roots of Evil followed in 1998, while The Giancana Story, delayed by the collapse of Rawkus Records, arrived in 2002. These releases were unevenly received, but they reinforced his commitment to long-form street narratives and the mob-inspired persona that had become a defining part of his work.
Kool G Rap remained active through independent releases and collaborations. Projects such as Half a Klip, Riches, Royalty & Respect, Return of the Don, and Son of G Rap, recorded with 38 Spesh, connected his veteran voice with younger underground artists and producers. He also formed The Godfathers with Necro for Once Upon a Crime, a project that pushed his writing toward horror and crime fiction. His later album Last of a Dying Breed was released in 2022, and he continued appearing on collaborative tracks in the 2020s.
Kool G Rap's influence reaches well beyond his own catalog. His multisyllabic rhyme schemes, breath control, vivid depictions of criminal life, and filmic approach to songwriting influenced artists including Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, Big Pun, and Eminem. Although he never pursued the level of mainstream exposure achieved by many of his descendants, his work with DJ Polo and his early solo recordings established him as one of hip-hop's most important technical and stylistic architects.
