Biography

Eilert Pilarm is the stage name of Swedish singer and Elvis Presley impersonator Eilert Dahlberg, born April 2, 1953, in Anundsjo, Sweden. He became known for his highly individual interpretations of Elvis songs, performed in a distinctive style that made him one of Sweden's best-known outsider music figures during the 1990s.

Dahlberg began recording Elvis material on his own in the early 1990s. Before receiving wider attention, he issued several cassette releases, including Elvis I, Elvis II, and Elvis III. His breakthrough came in 1992, when he appeared on the Swedish radio program Morgonpasset. The broadcast introduced a national audience to his unusual singing style and his enthusiastic stage persona. He was soon widely referred to as the "Husum Elvis," after the locality where he lived.

Pilarm's performances were not conventional Elvis tributes. Rather than attempting a polished imitation, he delivered the songs with an idiosyncratic vocal approach, unconventional pronunciation, and an earnest commitment to the material. His stage clothing, including heavily decorated jumpsuits, also became part of his public image. The contrast between his sincere devotion to Presley and the unconventional execution of the songs gave Pilarm a profile unlike that of most tribute performers.

His first CD, Greatest Hits, was released by MCA in 1996. It collected material from his earlier recordings and brought his work to a broader market. Further releases included Eilert Is Back! in 1998 and Live in Stockholm in 2000. His repertoire was centered on Presley songs, although he also recorded versions of material associated with other artists and traditional songs. A Christmas release, Eilerts Jul, became particularly memorable for its striking cover design and its place in discussions of unusual album artwork.

During the peak of his popularity, Pilarm performed extensively in Sweden and abroad. He appeared on television in Denmark and the United Kingdom, performed in Norway, and made a radio appearance in the United States during Elvis Week. His television exposure included a millennium special connected with the British program The Big Breakfast. Swedish media reported that he completed approximately 600 performances and released six albums during his active period.

Pilarm's career has often been discussed in the context of outsider music, a field associated with artists whose work falls outside established ideas of technical polish or commercial convention. He was included in Irwin Chusid's book Songs in the Key of Z: The Curious Universe of Outsider Music, which helped introduce his recordings to an international audience interested in unconventional performers.

After more than a decade of activity, Pilarm announced that he was ending his music career in the early 2000s. He subsequently withdrew from regular performance. His recordings, however, have continued to circulate through reissues, streaming services, compilations, and online interest in unusual music. Eilert Pilarm remains a singular figure in Swedish popular culture: not simply an Elvis impersonator, but an outsider performer whose sincerity, visual presentation, and unmistakable vocal style made him internationally recognizable.
