Anouk is the professional name of Dutch singer, songwriter and producer Anouk Teeuwe, born April 8, 1975, in The Hague, Netherlands. Known for her powerful, raspy voice and emotionally direct delivery, she has built one of the most durable careers in Dutch popular music. Her work moves between alternative rock, pop rock, soul and contemporary singer-songwriter styles, while retaining a strong emphasis on vocal performance and personal songwriting.
Anouk began performing as a teenager and sang with the band Shotgun Wedding before studying at the Rotterdam Conservatory. Her early career took a decisive turn after she met Barry Hay and George Kooymans of the Dutch rock band Golden Earring. They recognized her potential and became involved in writing and producing material for her. The song "Mood Indigo" appeared in 1996, but it was her 1997 single "Nobody's Wife" that established her as a major artist. Driven by a forceful guitar sound and Anouk's commanding vocal, the song became a major hit in the Netherlands and also gained attention in several other European countries.
Her debut album, Together Alone (1997), combined rock instrumentation with blues and soul influences and reached the top of the Dutch album chart. Anouk followed it with Urban Solitude (1999), which consolidated her position in the Netherlands and Belgium. During the early 2000s she expanded her sound through albums such as Graduated Fool (2002) and Hotel New York (2004). Singles including "Michel," "R U Kiddin' Me," "Girl" and "Lost" demonstrated her ability to move between hard-edged rock, polished pop and more reflective material without losing her distinctive vocal identity.
The late 2000s brought further commercial success with Who's Your Momma? (2007) and For Bitter or Worse (2009). The latter included "Three Days in a Row," another major Dutch hit. She continued to alternate between full studio releases and live projects, including Live at Gelredome (2008), which documented her ability to command a large arena audience. To Get Her Together followed in 2011, extending her collaboration with Swedish producers and songwriters Tore Johansson and Martin Gjerstad.
In 2013, Anouk represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo with "Birds." The dramatic ballad qualified for the final and finished ninth, giving the Netherlands one of its strongest results in several years. The song appeared on Sad Singalong Songs, an album that emphasized atmospheric arrangements and a darker, more introspective mood. She later wrote "Walk Along," the Dutch entry performed by Trijntje Oosterhuis at the 2015 contest.
Anouk remained prolific in the following decade. She released Queen for a Day and Fake It Till We Die in 2016, followed by Wen d'r Maar Aan in 2018, her first album performed entirely in Dutch. After the intimate English-language mini-album Trails of Fails (2022), she released Deena & Jim in 2023. Her 2025 album Set This Thing on Fire marked a return to a heavier rock-oriented sound.
Alongside recording and touring, Anouk has appeared as a coach on the Dutch television talent show The Voice of Holland. Across her career, she has remained notable for treating mainstream success as a platform for stylistic change rather than a reason to repeat one formula. Her combination of rock authority, pop accessibility and uncompromising vocal character has made her one of the defining Dutch artists of her generation.
