Biography

Silversun Pickups are an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 2000, the group is known for its layered guitar sound, dynamic arrangements, atmospheric textures, and the contrast between Brian Aubert's urgent lead vocals and Nikki Monninger's melodic bass work. The band consists of Aubert, Monninger, drummer Christopher Guanlao, and keyboardist Joe Lester.

The group emerged from the Silver Lake music scene, initially performing under the name A Couple of Couples. The original lineup also included guitarist Jack Kennedy and drummer Elvira Gonzalez. After Kennedy and Gonzalez left in the early 2000s, Guanlao joined on drums and Lester became part of the reconfigured lineup. The name Silversun Pickups refers to a liquor store near the Silverlake Lounge, one of the venues where the band established itself through regular club performances.

Silversun Pickups made their recorded debut with the EP Pikul, released by Dangerbird Records in 2005. The release introduced the band's defining balance of shoegaze-influenced guitar noise, indie rock melody, and carefully controlled intensity. Their first full-length album, Carnavas, followed in 2006 and turned the group into one of the most visible new acts in American alternative rock. The singles "Lazy Eye" and "Well Thought Out Twinkles" became major modern rock hits, while the official video for "Lazy Eye" helped establish the band's visual identity alongside its radio success.

The group expanded its audience through extensive touring and festival appearances, including Coachella, as well as support dates with acts such as Wolfmother, Snow Patrol, OK Go, and Foo Fighters. Carnavas also benefited from the growing use of alternative rock in video games. "Lazy Eye" appeared in Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero World Tour, and Forza Horizon, giving the band additional exposure beyond traditional music television and radio.

Swoon, released in 2009, marked a larger and more ambitious production style. Built around dense guitars, dramatic shifts in volume, and emotionally charged songwriting, the album entered the Billboard 200 in the Top 10. Its lead single, "Panic Switch", became one of the band's signature songs and received a prominent official music video. Silversun Pickups were nominated for the Best New Artist Grammy Award in 2010, despite having already spent years developing their career.

With Neck of the Woods in 2012, the band worked with producer Jacknife Lee and introduced a darker, more spacious approach. The album reached the band's highest Billboard 200 position, while tracks such as "Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)" and "The Pit" continued their run of successful alternative radio singles. After leaving Dangerbird, the group formed its own label, New Machine Records, and released Better Nature in 2015.

Later albums included Widow's Weeds in 2019, produced by Butch Vig, and Physical Thrills in 2022. Their seventh studio album, Tenterhooks, was released on February 6, 2026. The record continued the band's collaboration with Vig and extended its established mixture of forceful guitar rock, electronic color, and melodic songwriting. Across more than two decades, Silversun Pickups have maintained a stable core lineup while refining a sound that connects the intensity of 1990s alternative rock with the polished scale of modern indie production.
