Biography

Eleni Mandell is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer whose work has established her as a distinctive voice in Los Angeles independent music. Born in Los Angeles in 1969 and raised in the San Fernando Valley, she developed an early interest in the city's punk and underground rock culture. The music of X, as well as the songwriting of Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Randy Newman, helped shape her approach to performance and composition.

Mandell began writing songs while studying at the University of California, Berkeley. After returning to Los Angeles, she came under the mentorship of musician Chuck E. Weiss, a close associate of Tom Waits. Weiss became an important early influence as Mandell developed a style built around vivid character sketches, dry humor, romantic tension, and an often cinematic sense of atmosphere.

She financed her first album, Wishbone, which appeared in 1998 with production by Jon Brion. The record introduced the smoky vocals, dramatic arrangements, and noir-tinged songwriting that would remain central to her work. Critics compared her at different points to Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, and classic torch singers, although Mandell's music also drew from country, folk, jazz, and the traditions of Los Angeles roots rock. Her next releases, Thrill and Snakebite, continued to explore intimate, sometimes unsettling songs about desire, loneliness, and damaged relationships.

Mandell took a pronounced stylistic turn with Country for True Lovers in 2003. Produced by Tony Gilkyson, the album combined original songs with material inspired by traditional country music and the work of artists such as Tammy Wynette, Merle Haggard, and Hank Cochran. Rather than abandoning her earlier identity, Mandell used country instrumentation and classic songwriting forms to expand the emotional range of her music. Afternoon, released in 2004, returned to the nocturnal urban mood associated with her earlier records.

Her subsequent albums included Miracle of Five, Artificial Fire, I Can See the Future, Let's Fly a Kite, and Dark Lights Up. These records featured collaborations with notable musicians including Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, X drummer D.J. Bonebrake, and members of Nick Lowe's touring band. I Can See the Future, released in 2012, marked her first album licensed in the United States by Yep Roc Records and brought together polished pop arrangements with her characteristic lyrical precision.

Mandell has also been active in collaborative projects. She was a member of the Grabs, an ensemble featuring Blondie's Nigel Harrison and other Los Angeles musicians, and helped form the harmony-based group the Living Sisters with Inara George, Becky Stark, and Alex Lilly. The Living Sisters released Love to Live in 2010 and Run for Cover in 2013, drawing on close vocal harmonies and classic American popular music.

Between albums, Mandell taught songwriting at colleges and at a women's prison through the Jail Guitar Doors program. The experience influenced Wake Up Again, her 2019 album, whose songs examine remorse, isolation, family bonds, and the possibility of personal change. In 2017, Inara George organized Unsung Heroes: Songs of Eleni Mandell, a concert and album featuring performances by Jackson Browne, Van Dyke Parks, Lera Lynn, and other artists.

After several years away from recording and touring while working as a high school English teacher, Mandell returned with the album Tailspin in 2026. The record extends her long-standing blend of folk, country, jazz, and literate pop while maintaining the restrained, emotionally observant songwriting that has defined her career. Across more than two decades, Mandell has remained an independent artist known less for commercial fashion than for consistency, atmosphere, and an unusually sharp ear for the complicated stories behind ordinary lives.
