Dane Jeffrey Cook (born March 18, 1972) is an American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, producer, and director. Raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Cook began performing stand-up while still in high school. He later studied graphic design, but comedy became his principal career. His style combines observational humor, physical performance, vocal characterization, and fast-paced stories about relationships, social behavior, and everyday frustrations.
Cook's breakthrough came during the early 2000s, when he used the internet and social media to build a direct connection with audiences. His website and Myspace presence helped him develop a substantial following before the later expansion of social platforms. This approach allowed him to promote recordings and live appearances independently of traditional television exposure, making him one of the most prominent examples of a comedian who converted online popularity into mainstream success.
His debut comedy album, Harmful If Swallowed, was released in 2003 through Comedy Central Records. The project introduced his energetic delivery and highly animated stage persona to a wider audience. Cook's major commercial breakthrough followed with Retaliation in 2005. The album reached the upper part of the Billboard 200, an unusual achievement for a comedy recording, and eventually received multi-platinum certification. Its success helped establish Cook as one of the most commercially visible stand-up performers of his generation.
Cook expanded his live work through television specials and touring projects. Vicious Circle, filmed for HBO in 2005 and released as a special in 2006, presented his material in a large-scale arena setting. The documentary series Tourgasm, which Cook executive produced and directed in part, followed a comedy tour featuring several performers. He later released Rough Around the Edges: Live from Madison Square Garden in 2007 and Isolated Incident in 2009. His subsequent comedy specials include Troublemaker in 2014 and Above It All in 2022.
Acting became a second major part of Cook's career. After early appearances in films such as Mystery Men and Simon Sez, he took leading roles in the comedies Employee of the Month (2006), Good Luck Chuck (2007), and My Best Friend's Girl (2008). He also pursued more dramatic material, playing a disturbed photographer opposite Kevin Costner in Mr. Brooks (2007). Other notable film credits include Waiting... and Dan in Real Life. Cook supplied the voice of Dusty Crophopper in the animated films Planes (2013) and Planes: Fire & Rescue (2014).
Although his peak mainstream visibility came in the mid-2000s, Cook has continued to work in stand-up, film, television, and online entertainment. His career is notable for the way he combined touring, recorded comedy, acting, and self-directed promotion, helping demonstrate how a performer could build a large audience outside the traditional comedy-club and television system.
