Biography

Nolwenn Leroy is a French singer, songwriter, musician, and actress. Born Nolwenn Le Magueresse on September 28, 1982, in Saint-Renan, Finistere, she grew up between Brittany and other parts of France. She received classical musical training, studied violin, and developed an interest in opera and vocal performance. During an exchange year in the United States, she also became increasingly drawn to singing and performance, although she initially considered studying law and pursuing humanitarian work.

Leroy became widely known in 2002 when she won the second season of the French television talent show Star Academy. Her victory led to a recording contract with Universal Music France and established the stage name Nolwenn Leroy, using her mother's family name. Her self-titled debut album, Nolwenn, appeared in 2003. Combining polished French pop with dramatic ballads, the album produced the chart-topping single "Cassé" and also included "Suivre une etoile", "Une femme cachee", and "Inevitablement". The record became a major commercial success and earned her the NRJ Music Award for Francophone Revelation.

Her second album, Histoires naturelles, arrived in 2005 and marked a more distinctive artistic direction. Produced with Laurent Voulzy and Frank Eulry, it introduced lighter, more atmospheric arrangements and a stronger Celtic influence. The single "Nolwenn Ohwo!", written with Voulzy and Alain Souchon, became another French number-one hit. The album's visual identity was reinforced by imaginative music videos, particularly the surreal "Histoire naturelle", which presented Leroy in a series of museum-like tableaux. The subsequent Histoires Naturelles Tour was documented on a live CD and DVD.

For Le Cheshire Cat et moi in 2009, Leroy worked with producer Teitur Lassen and moved toward a more international pop sound. The album included songs in English and was notable for Leroy's expanded role as a lyricist. Its relatively restrained commercial performance encouraged her to pursue a project closer to her Breton roots.

That project became Bretonne, released in 2010. Built around traditional songs and modern compositions connected to Brittany, the album included material sung in French, English, Breton, and Gaelic. Its success far exceeded expectations: it topped the French and Belgian charts, was certified at diamond level in France, and became the defining release of Leroy's career. The album's repertoire, including "Tri Martolod", "La jument de Michao", and her interpretation of "Brest", also shaped a new public image for the singer as an artist connected to Celtic and regional culture.

She continued this approach with O Filles de l'Eau in 2012, an ocean-themed album featuring Celtic textures, multilingual songs, and several compositions co-written by Leroy. It was followed by Gemme in 2017, a more personal and contemporary record on which she wrote or co-composed much of the material. In 2018, she released Folk, an album of French-language interpretations of songs by artists including Francis Cabrel, Jacques Higelin, Nino Ferrer, and Nicolas Peyrac.

Her eighth studio album, La Cavale, was released in 2021 and produced by Benjamin Biolay. Led by "Bresil, Finistere", it returned her to the French Top 10 while combining modern pop production with her established melodic style. Alongside music, Leroy has worked in screen entertainment, providing French voices for animated films including Rise of the Guardians and Song of the Sea. She later appeared in the television series Capitaine Marleau and played the lead role in the 2024 miniseries Broceliande. Across her career, Leroy has balanced mainstream success with a continuing interest in Celtic heritage, literary imagery, multilingual performance, and carefully designed music videos.
