Wiki

Biography

Lata Mangeshkar (28 September 1929 - 6 February 2022) was an Indian playback singer, composer, and one of the defining voices of Hindi cinema. Born Hema Dinanath Mangeshkar in Indore, she grew up in a musical family led by her father, Dinanath Mangeshkar, a classical singer and Marathi theater performer. Her early training in Hindustani classical music gave her an unusually controlled voice, precise diction, and an ability to move between delicate romantic expression and demanding dramatic passages.MusicBrainz, "Lata Mangeshkar," artist entry.

Mangeshkar began performing while still a child and entered the Marathi film industry in the early 1940s. Following her father's death in 1942, she worked in acting and singing to help support her family, although she gradually moved away from screen appearances and concentrated on playback singing. Her first Hindi film playback work came in the 1940s, but her career changed decisively after she attracted the attention of composer Ghulam Haider. Her performance of "Aayega Aanewala" in the 1949 film *Mahal* established a new ideal for the female playback voice and made her a major star of the post-independence Hindi film industry.British Film Institute, "Lata Mangeshkar, legendary playback singer and 'nightingale of India', 1929 to 2022."

Playback singers recorded songs that were later lip-synced by actors on screen. Mangeshkar's voice became closely associated with generations of leading actresses, while her recordings supplied emotional continuity across changing fashions in Indian cinema. During the 1950s and 1960s, she worked with leading composers including Naushad, S. D. Burman, Shankar-Jaikishan, Madan Mohan, Salil Chowdhury, and Roshan. Songs such as "Aaja Re Pardesi," "Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya," and "Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh" demonstrated her ability to combine classical technique with the direct emotional appeal required by popular film music.

Her repertoire extended well beyond romantic songs. "Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon" became an important patriotic performance, while "Lag Ja Gale," "Tere Bina Zindagi Se," and "Naam Goom Jayega" later acquired lives of their own outside the films for which they were recorded. She sang in numerous Indian languages, particularly Hindi, Marathi, and Bengali, and also recorded devotional music, ghazals, folk-inspired material, and non-film albums. Her partnerships with composers such as R. D. Burman and Laxmikant-Pyarelal helped carry her style into the changing sound of the 1970s and 1980s.

Mangeshkar was also a composer for Marathi films, using the name Anandghan, and performed extensively in concerts. In 1974, she appeared at the Royal Albert Hall in London, an important international milestone for an Indian playback singer. She received three National Film Awards, several Filmfare honors, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989, the Padma Vibhushan in 1999, and the Bharat Ratna in 2001, India's highest civilian award.Government of India, Gazette notification conferring the Bharat Ratna on Lata Dinanath Mangeshkar, 26 January 2001.

Mangeshkar's importance lies not only in the size of her recorded output but also in the standard she established for film singing. Her voice became a cultural reference point across India, capable of suggesting innocence, longing, devotion, grief, and patriotic feeling without losing clarity or restraint. By the time of her death in Mumbai on 6 February 2022, she had spent roughly eight decades at the center of Indian popular music. She remains widely known as the "Nightingale of India" and the "Queen of Melody," titles that reflect both her public stature and her lasting influence on South Asian film music.BBC News, "Obituary: Lata Mangeshkar, 'nightingale of Bollywood'," 2022.
