Prince Paul is the professional name of Paul Edward Huston (born April 2, 1967), an American record producer, DJ, rapper, and recording artist from Amityville, New York. His career has been defined by adventurous sampling, unconventional arrangements, comic interludes, and a willingness to treat hip-hop albums as fully developed worlds rather than simple collections of songs.
Paul began collecting records as a child and started DJing during his early teens. In 1984, he joined Stetsasonic, a pioneering hip-hop group that combined turntablism, live instrumentation, and socially aware lyrics. As the group's DJ and producer, Paul helped shape its music and gained experience in arranging beats, manipulating samples, and constructing songs around the distinct personalities of multiple performers.
His breakthrough came through his work with De La Soul. Paul produced the group's debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising (1989), a landmark release that expanded the possibilities of alternative hip-hop. The album's colorful samples, playful sound effects, unconventional song structures, and extended comedy skits gave it a loose, surreal atmosphere that contrasted sharply with the harder styles dominating rap at the time. Paul's production helped establish De La Soul as one of the most original groups of the late 1980s and early 1990s. He continued working with the group on De La Soul Is Dead (1991) and Buhloone Mindstate (1993), contributing to records that further developed the use of humor, collage, and conceptual storytelling in hip-hop.
During the same period, Paul produced music for artists including Big Daddy Kane, MC Lyte, 3rd Bass, and Boogie Down Productions. His approach was not limited to funk and soul samples; he drew from rock, pop, television, comedy recordings, and other unexpected sources. This broad palette became one of his defining characteristics.
In the early 1990s, Paul joined forces with RZA, Frukwan, and Too Poetic to form Gravediggaz. Working under the name The Undertaker, he contributed to 6 Feet Deep (1994), an influential horrorcore album that combined grim subject matter with dark humor and theatrical production. The project demonstrated his ability to move between playful, psychedelic hip-hop and much heavier, more sinister material.
Paul's solo career began with Psychoanalysis: What Is It? (1997), an experimental album built around skits, alter egos, and psychological themes. He followed it with A Prince Among Thieves (1999), a narrative album often described as a hip-hop opera. Featuring a large cast of rappers and singers, the record tells a crime story through interconnected songs and dialogue. Its cinematic structure confirmed Paul's reputation as a producer interested in plot, character, and atmosphere as much as individual beats.
He also formed Handsome Boy Modeling School with Dan the Automator. The duo's albums So... How's Your Girl? (1999) and White People (2004) brought together a wide range of guest performers and blended hip-hop with electronic music, rock, soul, and pop. Paul's later solo releases include Politics of the Business (2003), Itstrumental (2005), and Negroes on Ice (2012), while his continuing collaborations have preserved his status as one of hip-hop's most inventive and unpredictable producers.
