Haylie Katherine Duff (born February 19, 1985) is an American actress, singer, songwriter, television host, writer, and director. Born in Houston, Texas, she began performing at an early age and trained in ballet. As a child, she appeared in the Houston Metropolitan Dance Company's production of The Nutcracker Suite, an experience that helped lead her toward professional acting.
Duff started her screen career with guest roles in television productions, including the miniseries True Women and appearances on The Amanda Show, Chicago Hope, Boston Public, and Third Watch. She gained wider recognition in the early 2000s through recurring work on Disney Channel's Lizzie McGuire, where she played Amy Sanders. The role placed her within the same youth-oriented entertainment world as her younger sister, singer and actress Hilary Duff, although Haylie developed a career that ranged across acting, music, theater, television, and production.
Her breakthrough film role came in Jared Hess's independent comedy Napoleon Dynamite (2004), in which she played Summer Wheatley, a popular high-school student whose confidence contrasts with the film's eccentric central characters. The movie became a long-running favorite and earned Duff a Teen Choice Award. That same year, she voiced Princess Lucinda in the animated film In Search of Santa, appearing alongside Hilary, and performed with her sister on a cover of "Our Lips Are Sealed" for the soundtrack to A Cinderella Story. The song became her most prominent recording as a performer.
Duff also pursued songwriting. She co-wrote material recorded by Hilary Duff, contributing to songs associated with the albums Metamorphosis, Hilary Duff, and Dignity. Although plans for a solo album were discussed during the mid-2000s, no full-length album was released. Her other music appearances included soundtrack and compilation recordings, as well as a performance with Seth MacFarlane on Family Guy: Live in Vegas.
In television, Duff joined the cast of 7th Heaven in 2005 as Sandy Jameson, a role she played through 2007. Her film work during this period included Material Girls (2006), in which she starred with Hilary and also received a co-producer credit. She subsequently appeared in a mixture of independent films, television movies, and direct-to-video productions, including My Sexiest Year, Legacy, Fear Island, Tug, Video Girl, Slightly Single in L.A., and The Wedding Pact. She also supplied voice work for animated projects such as Foodfight! and Golden Winter.
Theater became another important part of Duff's career. In 2006, she joined the Broadway production of Hairspray as Amber Von Tussle. She later appeared in the stage production of Nora Ephron's Love, Loss & What I Wore. In 2008, she hosted and executive-produced MTV's Legally Blonde the Musical: The Search for Elle Woods, a reality competition centered on casting the musical's leading role.
Duff expanded her public profile through food and lifestyle media. She created The Real Girl's Kitchen, first as a blog and later as a cooking series, combining recipes with an accessible television format. In the 2020s, she moved increasingly into filmmaking behind the camera. She made her feature directing debut in 2022 and went on to direct television movies and independent projects, including The Neighbors Are Watching, Killer Nurses, Her Life Is on the Line, and Win, Place or Love. Her later work reflects a broadening career in which acting, writing, producing, and directing operate alongside one another.
