Biography

Nerina Natasha Georgina Pallot (born April 26, 1974) is a British singer-songwriter, musician and producer. Born in London and raised partly in Jersey, she developed a style that combines piano-led pop with rock, indie and alternative influences. Her songs are known for their strong melodies, detailed lyrics and willingness to address personal, social and political subjects without sacrificing accessibility.

Pallot began working toward a music career after being inspired by performers including Kate Bush. Before establishing herself as a recording artist, she worked as a publishing assistant at Mute Records, an experience that brought her into contact with the practical side of the music business. She subsequently signed to Polydor Records and released her debut album, Dear Frustrated Superstar, in August 2001. The record produced the singles "Patience" and "Alien", but its commercial performance did not meet expectations, and Pallot was dropped by the label.

The setback led her to take greater control of her career. She established Idaho Records and financed the development of her second album, Fires. Released independently in 2005 and later reissued through 14th Floor Records, the album became her breakthrough. Its most successful single, "Everybody's Gone to War", reached number 14 on the UK Singles Chart, while "Sophia" became another widely recognized song. Fires reached number 21 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified gold in the United Kingdom. Pallot's combination of emotionally direct writing and polished but substantial pop arrangements brought her wider attention, including nominations for British Female Solo Artist at the 2007 BRIT Awards and an Ivor Novello Award for "Sophia".

Pallot followed the success of Fires with The Graduate in 2009. She recorded and produced much of the album herself, reinforcing her reputation as an artist determined to shape her own material. The album included "Real Late Starter", a song later covered by Joe McElderry, and explored a more reflective and sometimes more experimental approach than its predecessor.

Her fourth album, Year of the Wolf, appeared in 2011 and featured production work with Bernard Butler. It extended Pallot's interest in combining large-scale pop songwriting with more personal themes. Around the same period, she became an in-demand writer for other performers. With her husband and collaborator Andy Chatterley, she co-wrote and co-produced "Aphrodite" and "Better Than Today" for Kylie Minogue's 2010 album of the same name. She also wrote "Put It Back Together" for Diana Vickers.

Pallot later moved further from the conventional album cycle. In 2014 she released a sequence of monthly EPs, allowing her to issue new material in a more immediate and flexible form. The project was collected as My Best Friends Are Imaginary: A Year of EPs. Her subsequent albums included The Sound and the Fury (2015), Stay Lucky (2017) and I Don't Know What I'm Doing (2022).

In 2024, Pallot released A Psalm for Emily Salvi, her eighth studio album. Introduced by the single "Regrets", it continued her practice of balancing candid songwriting with varied pop production. Across her career, Pallot has remained notable for her independence, musicianship and refusal to separate ambitious songwriting from the possibilities of mainstream pop.
