Carrie Marie Underwood (born March 10, 1983, in Muskogee, Oklahoma) is an American country singer, songwriter, actress, television personality, and entrepreneur. Raised in the small town of Checotah, she sang in church and at local events from childhood, later learning guitar and piano. While studying mass communication at Northeastern State University, she continued performing and entered the fourth season of the television talent competition American Idol. Her victory in 2005 transformed her from a regional performer into one of the most successful country artists of her generation.
Underwood's debut single, "Inside Your Heaven," became the first single by a country artist to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Her first album, Some Hearts (2005), established a more complete picture of her abilities. The record combined contemporary country, pop, and gospel influences, balancing the inspirational ballad "Jesus, Take the Wheel" with the sharply delivered revenge song "Before He Cheats." The album became a major commercial success and remains one of the strongest debuts by an American Idol contestant. It also demonstrated the contrast that would define Underwood's career: a polished mainstream image paired with a powerful voice and a willingness to explore emotionally direct material.
She followed Some Hearts with Carnival Ride (2007), Play On (2009), and Blown Away (2012). These albums produced such notable singles as "All-American Girl," "Cowboy Casanova," "Temporary Home," "Undo It," "Good Girl," and "Blown Away." Underwood's music during this period expanded beyond traditional country formulas, incorporating rock production, dramatic arrangements, and strong pop instincts while retaining country storytelling. Her vocal range and forceful live performances made her particularly effective on large stages and award-show broadcasts.
The compilation Greatest Hits: Decade #1 appeared in 2014, followed by Storyteller (2015), Cry Pretty (2018), My Gift (2020), My Savior (2021), and Denim & Rhinestones (2022). My Gift was a Christmas album, while My Savior focused on hymns and gospel standards, reflecting the religious influence that had been present in her work since her debut. Cry Pretty became her fourth album to reach number one on the Billboard 200, and it was the first album released by her own label imprint, marking a greater degree of creative control.
Underwood has also maintained a substantial presence outside recorded music. She portrayed Maria von Trapp in the 2013 television production The Sound of Music Live! and became the voice of the Sunday Night Football opening theme in 2013. In 2021, she began the Reflection residency at Resorts World Theatre in Las Vegas, a run that continued through 2025. She joined the judging panel of American Idol in 2025, twenty years after winning the program.
A member of the Grand Ole Opry since 2008, Underwood has received numerous Grammy, Academy of Country Music, Country Music Association, American Music, and CMT Music Awards. Her career is notable not simply for its commercial scale, but for the way it connected television fame with lasting country success. Through vocal power, crossover ambition, and a carefully developed catalog, she became one of the defining mainstream country performers of the 21st century.
