Biography

Maija Johanna Vilkkumaa (born November 9, 1973, in Helsinki) is a Finnish pop rock singer-songwriter known for her distinctive voice, direct lyrics, and long-running influence on Finnish popular music. Her songs often combine guitar-driven rock with melodic pop, while addressing independence, frustration, relationships, social expectations, and the emotional contradictions of everyday life.

Vilkkumaa began playing piano as a child and became involved in music during her school years. In 1990, while attending Kallio High School in Helsinki, she formed the band Tarharyhma with friends, including future actress Minna Haapkylä. Vilkkumaa wrote many of the group's songs and developed the songwriting style that would later define her solo work. Tarharyhma released two albums in the early 1990s before disbanding in 1995. Vilkkumaa also performed with the group Hunajamelonit and studied Finnish language at the University of Helsinki.

She launched her solo career in the late 1990s with a band built around her songwriting and vocal presence. Her debut album, Pitka ihana leikki, was released in 1999 by Warner Music Finland. Led by the single "Satumaa-tango," the album introduced a performer who could place sharp, conversational lyrics inside accessible rock arrangements. It reached number three on the Finnish Albums Chart, earned a gold certification, and established Vilkkumaa as one of the country's most prominent new female rock artists. She received the Emma Award for New Female Soloist of the Year in 2000.

The follow-up, Meikit, ketjut ja vyot, appeared in 2001 and became her first chart-topping album. Her commercial breakthrough arrived with Ei in 2003. The album remained on the Finnish chart for more than a year, sold more than 120,000 copies, and received a double-platinum certification. Its title track and other songs helped make Vilkkumaa a major national star, while the record's combination of energetic rock, memorable choruses, and candid storytelling broadened her audience. Ei won Emma Awards for Female Soloist, Album, and Pop/Rock Album of the Year.

Vilkkumaa continued her successful run with Se ei olekaan niin in 2005. The album reached number one and earned platinum status, and she was again named Female Soloist of the Year. In 2006, she released the compilation Totuutta ja tehtavaa, whose new single "Hei tie" became her first number-one single in Finland. A major concert tour followed, documented on the live album Ilta Savoyssa in 2007.

Her later 2000s albums Superpallo and Kunnes joet muuttaa suuntaa also debuted at number one, although their sales were lower than those of Ei. In 2010, she received the Juha Vainio Award for her songwriting, particularly for the vitality and natural spoken quality of her lyrics. After the 2011 summer tour, Vilkkumaa took a break from her regular band and live schedule.

She returned with the album Aja! in 2015 and later issued the EP Joku muu, mika in 2017. The compilation Maija! Hitit 1999-2019 marked two decades of solo work. Her album 1973, released in 2022, connected her mature perspective with the melodic rock and autobiographical candor that had defined her career from the beginning. She has remained an active live performer, including the Toinen Maija concert tour in 2024. With more than 300,000 certified records sold in Finland, Vilkkumaa ranks among the country's most successful female recording artists.
