Slick Rick (born Ricky Martin Lloyd Walters on January 14, 1965) is a British-American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. Born in London and raised from childhood in the Bronx, New York, he became one of hip-hop's defining storytellers. His relaxed delivery, theatrical character work, comic timing, and distinctive British-inflected voice helped establish a style that has influenced generations of rappers.
Walters began performing in the early 1980s under the name MC Ricky D. While attending LaGuardia High School of Music & Art, he formed the Kangol Crew with future rapper Dana Dane and took part in rap battles around New York City. In 1984, he met Doug E. Fresh and joined the Get Fresh Crew. Their first major recordings, "The Show" and "La-Di-Da-Di," became foundational hip-hop tracks. "La-Di-Da-Di," in particular, presented a complete character-driven narrative in a conversational style and became one of the most frequently sampled recordings in rap history.
Slick Rick signed with Def Jam Recordings in the mid-1980s and released his debut album, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, in 1988. The record reached the top of the Billboard R&B/hip-hop albums chart and eventually achieved platinum status. Its best-known songs include "Children's Story," "Hey Young World," "Teenage Love," and "Mona Lisa." The album's appeal came from the contrast between Rick's playful persona and the often serious subjects in his stories. He could shift rapidly from absurd humor to cautionary tales without losing the clarity or momentum of his rhymes.
His early success was interrupted by legal problems. In 1990, Walters pleaded guilty to charges connected with the shooting of his cousin, who had previously worked as his bodyguard. The incident led to a prison sentence and disrupted his career during a crucial period in hip-hop. Nevertheless, he remained active as a recording artist. The Ruler's Back appeared in 1991, followed by Behind Bars in 1994. Both albums were shaped by the circumstances of his incarceration, with the latter using material recorded during a work-release period.
After his release, Slick Rick returned with The Art of Storytelling in 1999. The album paired him with artists including Nas, Snoop Dogg, OutKast, and Raekwon, and demonstrated that his narrative approach still worked alongside contemporary production and younger rap voices. It became his highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 and earned a gold certification.
Immigration disputes continued to affect his professional life after his prison term. In 2008, New York Governor David Paterson granted him a pardon, helping resolve the threat of deportation that had followed Walters for years. Slick Rick continued to appear as a guest artist and live performer, maintaining a strong presence in hip-hop culture despite the limited size of his solo catalog.
He received the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. On June 13, 2025, he released Victory, his first studio album in 26 years. Issued through 7Wallace and Mass Appeal, the project combined his classic storytelling with contemporary production and appearances by artists including Nas, Giggs, and Estelle. Slick Rick's influence rests less on the number of albums he has made than on the originality of his voice, the cinematic quality of his writing, and the enduring vocabulary of characters and stories introduced on his earliest recordings.
