Billy Corgan (born William Patrick Corgan Jr. on March 17, 1967) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, producer, author, and professional wrestling promoter. He is best known as the founder, lead vocalist, guitarist, principal songwriter, and only constant member of The Smashing Pumpkins. Through the band and his solo work, Corgan has developed a style that combines alternative rock's emotional directness with heavy guitars, psychedelic textures, gothic atmosphere, pop melody, and elaborate studio production.
Raised in the Chicago area, Corgan began performing in local bands during the 1980s. He spent part of the decade in Florida with the gothic rock group The Marked before returning to Chicago, where he formed the Smashing Pumpkins with guitarist James Iha in 1988. Bassist D'arcy Wretzky and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin soon completed the group's best-known early lineup. Corgan's ambitious writing and tightly controlled production approach helped distinguish the band from the grunge and alternative rock acts with which it was often associated.
The Smashing Pumpkins' debut album, Gish (1991), announced Corgan as a songwriter capable of balancing dense guitar arrangements with vulnerable, highly personal lyrics. The band's breakthrough came with Siamese Dream (1993), whose singles "Cherub Rock," "Today," "Disarm," and "Rocket" brought the group a large international audience. Corgan played a central role in shaping the album's layered sound, while the band's music videos helped establish a distinctive visual identity on MTV and other music television outlets.
Corgan expanded that scale on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995), a double album that moved from aggressive hard rock to piano ballads, electronic passages, and orchestral pop. Its singles included "Bullet with Butterfly Wings," "1979," "Tonight, Tonight," and "Thirty-Three." The album became the band's commercial peak, earned multiple Grammy Award nominations, and won awards for "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and "The End Is the Beginning Is the End." Corgan continued to push against expectations on Adore (1998), a darker, more electronic record made during a period of major lineup changes, and on Machina/The Machines of God (2000), the band's final studio album before its initial breakup.
Following the Pumpkins' split, Corgan formed Zwan with Chamberlin and other musicians. Zwan released Mary Star of the Sea in 2003, but dissolved soon afterward. Corgan then pursued a solo career with TheFutureEmbrace (2005), an electronic and atmospheric album featuring a collaboration with Robert Smith of The Cure. He also published the poetry collection Blinking with Fists in 2004.
Corgan revived the Smashing Pumpkins in the mid-2000s. Although the lineup changed repeatedly, he remained the band's creative center as it released Zeitgeist (2007), Oceania (2012), Monuments to an Elegy (2014), Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun. (2018), Cyr (2020), and the three-part rock opera Atum (2023). Aghori Mhori Mei (2024) emphasized a more guitar-driven sound and reunited Corgan with Iha and Chamberlin within the band's active core.
His later solo recordings include Ogilala (2017), released under the name WPC, and Cotillions (2019), credited to William Patrick Corgan. Outside music, he co-founded Resistance Pro Wrestling in 2011, worked with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, and became owner and promoter of the National Wrestling Alliance in 2017. These ventures reflect the same independent, sometimes confrontational creative outlook that has defined his music: Corgan has consistently treated genre, format, and commercial expectation as material to reshape rather than limits to accept.
