Tia Carrere is an American actress and singer whose career has moved between mainstream film, television, animation, and Hawaiian music. Born Althea Rae Duhinio Janairo on January 2, 1967, in Honolulu, Hawaii, she was raised in the islands and began working in entertainment after being discovered while shopping in a grocery store. Her first film role was in the Hawaii-set drama Aloha Summer, filmed in the mid-1980s and released in 1988.
Carrere moved to Los Angeles and built early television experience with guest appearances before joining the cast of the daytime soap opera General Hospital. She subsequently appeared in programs including MacGyver, Quantum Leap, Married... with Children, and Friday the 13th. These roles established her as a versatile performer, but her major breakthrough came with Wayne's World (1992).
In Wayne's World, Carrere played Cassandra Wong, the confident singer and guitarist whose musical ambitions become central to the story. Her performance combined comic timing, screen presence, and genuine vocal ability, helping make Cassandra one of the film's most memorable characters. Carrere returned to the role in Wayne's World 2 (1993), while also contributing vocals to the first film's commercially successful soundtrack. Her visibility from the two comedies led to larger film roles, including Jingo Asakuma in Rising Sun and Juno Skinner in James Cameron's action film True Lies (1994).
Carrere continued to work regularly in film and television throughout the 1990s. Her credits included High School High, Jury Duty, The Immortals, and Kull the Conqueror, as well as television appearances in shows such as Nip/Tuck, Curb Your Enthusiasm, In Plain Sight, and Hawaii Five-0. From 1999 to 2002, she played archaeologist Sydney Fox in the syndicated action-adventure series Relic Hunter. The role gave her an extended leading part and allowed her to combine physical action with the show's lighter, often comic tone.
Carrere also became strongly associated with animation. She voiced Nani Pelekai, the older sister and guardian of the title character, in Disney's Lilo & Stitch (2002), its television continuation, and related productions. Nani's mixture of humor, responsibility, and vulnerability gave Carrere a role notably different from her earlier action and comedy parts. She later returned to the franchise as Mrs. Kekoa in the 2025 live-action adaptation.
Music has remained an important second strand of Carrere's career. After releasing the pop-oriented album Dream in 1993, she turned increasingly toward Hawaiian music. Her albums Hawaiiana (2007), Ikena (2008), He Nani (2009), and Huana Ke Aloha (2010), several made with musician and producer Daniel Ho, center on Hawaiian-language material and traditional influences. Ikena and Huana Ke Aloha won Grammy Awards for Hawaiian Music Album, giving Carrere two victories from four nominations and confirming her standing as more than an occasional soundtrack vocalist.
In later years, Carrere continued appearing in movies and television, including AJ and the Queen, Easter Sunday, and Never Have I Ever. Her career is defined by an unusual ability to connect commercial entertainment with a sustained commitment to Hawaiian musical culture.
