Blindside is a Swedish rock band formed in Stockholm in 1994. Originally known as Underfree, the group adopted the name Blindside in 1996. The core lineup has consisted of vocalist Christian Lindskog, guitarist Simon Grenehed, bassist Tomas Naslund, and drummer Marcus Dahlstrom. Their music combines post-hardcore intensity with alternative metal, melodic rock, and elements of nu metal, while their openly Christian perspective has remained an important part of their identity.
Blindside established themselves in Sweden's Christian heavy music scene with the self-titled album Blindside, released in 1997. The record drew on hardcore and alternative metal, pairing abrasive guitar work with more melodic passages and emotionally direct lyrics. A distribution arrangement with Tooth & Nail Records helped the band reach listeners outside Sweden, and the Empty Box EP followed in 1998.
The group's second full-length, A Thought Crushed My Mind, arrived in 2000 and showed a more developed approach to songwriting. Blindside retained their aggressive foundation but expanded their use of atmosphere, melody, and dramatic vocal contrasts. Their growing profile led to touring opportunities with American rock and Christian metal acts, most notably P.O.D. These connections helped Blindside secure a deal with Elektra Records, a significant step for a Swedish band working within the Christian music world.
Blindside's international breakthrough came with Silence in 2002. Produced by Howard Benson, the album presented a polished but forceful version of the band's sound, balancing post-hardcore aggression with strong hooks and reflective lyrics. The single "Pitiful" became their best-known song and received exposure through MTV2, rock radio, and the soundtrack to the video game NHL 2003. Its music video reinforced the band's visibility during a period when emotionally charged guitar music was reaching a broad audience. Blindside also toured with acts including Hoobastank and P.O.D.
The band continued its development with About a Burning Fire in 2004. Although still heavy, the album placed greater emphasis on melody, texture, and spacious production. Songs such as "All of Us" and the title track expanded Blindside's reach without abandoning the urgency of their earlier work. Their next album, The Great Depression, appeared in 2005 after changes in the band's label situation. It presented another variation on their sound, with energetic rock arrangements and a more conceptual visual identity. The accompanying video for "Fell in Love with the Game" used a narrative approach rather than relying solely on concert-style performance.
Blindside issued The Black Rose EP in 2006 and later released With Shivering Hearts We Wait in 2011. The latter marked a return after a period of reduced activity and incorporated strings, electronic color, and a more expansive production style alongside the band's established guitar-driven sound. The group subsequently released the single "Gravedigger" in 2019.
After another extended gap between releases, Blindside returned with "Dead Weight" on March 21, 2025. The song confirmed the continuing presence of the original four-piece and was accompanied by an official music video. Blindside's career is defined by the tension between heaviness and vulnerability: they brought the emotional directness of hardcore into a more melodic setting and became one of the most internationally recognized bands to emerge from Sweden's Christian rock scene.
