Wiki

Biography

Shinedown is an American hard rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2001 by vocalist Brent Smith. Built around Smith's powerful, emotionally direct singing, the group became one of the most successful American rock acts of the 2000s and 2010s. Its music combines alternative metal weight, post-grunge melodicism, arena-rock scale, and lyrics focused on struggle, recovery, resilience, and personal identity.

Smith had previously fronted the band Dreve, which was signed to Atlantic Records but never released an album. After the group dissolved, Atlantic retained Smith and helped him develop a new project. In Jacksonville, he recruited bassist Brad Stewart, guitarist Jasin Todd, and drummer Barry Kerch. This lineup recorded Shinedown's debut album, *Leave a Whisper*, released in 2003.

Although *Leave a Whisper* was not an immediate sensation, extensive touring and a steady run of rock-radio singles gradually established the band. "Fly from the Inside," "45," "Simple Man," and "Burning Bright" all became significant Mainstream Rock hits. The album eventually earned platinum certification in the United States, giving Shinedown a durable platform and demonstrating the group's ability to connect with audiences beyond its initial regional following.

The band's second album, *Us and Them* (2005), expanded its commercial reach. It included "Save Me," which became Shinedown's first major number one rock hit, and "I Dare You," a song that highlighted Smith's preference for large, melodic choruses. During the making of the next album, Stewart and Todd left the band. Guitarist Zach Myers, who had previously been involved with the group as a touring musician, became a permanent member, while Eric Bass joined on bass. This lineup, completed by Kerch, became the band's long-term creative and performing unit.

Shinedown's breakthrough album was *The Sound of Madness* (2008), produced by Rob Cavallo. The record refined the band's balance of heavy guitars, polished production, and emotionally expansive songwriting. "Devour," "Sound of Madness," "If You Only Knew," and especially "Second Chance" helped make the album a mainstream success. "Second Chance" became the band's highest-charting single on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains one of its signature songs. The album also helped establish Shinedown as a major live act and made its radio success unusually consistent across hard rock and more accessible formats.

The band followed with *Amaryllis* (2012), whose singles included "Bully," "Unity," and "Enemies." *Threat to Survival* (2015) continued the group's move toward streamlined, contemporary production, while *Attention Attention* (2018) used a conceptual framework to trace a journey from insecurity and isolation toward confidence and self-acceptance. In 2022, Shinedown released *Planet Zero*, a concept album addressing social division, online conformity, and the pressure to reduce complex human problems to simple slogans.

Shinedown's catalog also includes contributions to film-related projects, including "Diamond Eyes" for *The Expendables* and "Her Name Is Alice" for *Almost Alice*. The band's success has been particularly pronounced on American rock radio. By 2025, it had become the first act to place 20 songs at number one on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, a record reflecting the group's remarkable longevity and consistency.

In 2026, Shinedown issued its eighth studio album, *EI8HT*. The record followed the singles "Three Six Five," "Dance, Kid, Dance," "Killing Fields," "Searchlight," and "Safe and Sound," while presenting a broad stylistic range that included muscular rock, emotional ballads, and country-influenced textures. Across its career, Shinedown has remained centered on Smith's expressive voice, Kerch's steady drumming, Myers' guitar work, and Bass' expanding role as a musician and producer.
