Biography

Modest Mouse is an American indie rock band formed in Issaquah, Washington, in 1993 by vocalist and guitarist Isaac Brock, bassist Eric Judy, and drummer Jeremiah Green. Led throughout its career by Brock's distinctive singing and songwriting, the group developed from a rough-edged Pacific Northwest act into one of the most commercially successful bands associated with American indie rock.

Modest Mouse's early recordings established a sound built from abrasive guitars, irregular rhythms, stark production, and lyrics concerned with alienation, mortality, consumerism, and the uneasy relationship between individuals and the world around them. The band's first full-length album, This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, appeared in 1996 on Up Records. Its restless arrangements and often claustrophobic atmosphere helped define the band's early identity.

The following year's The Lonesome Crowded West expanded that approach into a more ambitious and widely admired statement. The album combined noisy guitar passages, shifting tempos, and Brock's tense vocal delivery with songs about development, displacement, and emotional disconnection. It became a landmark of 1990s indie rock and helped establish Modest Mouse as a major band within the American underground.

Modest Mouse moved to Epic Records for The Moon & Antarctica in 2000. Although it retained the band's experimental instincts, the album presented a broader and more carefully produced sound. Tracks such as "3rd Planet," "Gravity Rides Everything," and "The Stars Are Projectors" reflected Brock's increasingly philosophical writing while preserving the band's sense of instability and surprise. The album later became regarded as one of the central works of the band's catalog.

The group's breakthrough came with Good News for People Who Love Bad News in 2004. The album's lead single, "Float On," turned Modest Mouse into a mainstream act without entirely abandoning its unusual lyrical perspective. Its upbeat rhythm and memorable chorus contrasted with Brock's anxious worldview, while songs such as "Ocean Breathes Salty" and "The World at Large" showed the band widening its palette with keyboards, horns, strings, and more conventional pop structures. The album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album and achieved platinum status in the United States.

Modest Mouse followed with We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank in 2007, featuring former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr as a prominent member of the recording lineup. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and produced the singles "Dashboard" and "Missed the Boat." Marr's presence encouraged a more expansive guitar sound, although the band continued to revolve around Brock's songwriting.

Later releases included the rarities collection No One's First, and You're Next, the studio album Strangers to Ourselves in 2015, and The Golden Casket in 2021. These records showed Modest Mouse continuing to combine electronic textures, pop melody, noisy rock, and Brock's characteristically unsettled observations. The lineup changed repeatedly over the years, but Brock remained the band's constant creative center.

Green, a founding member and the drummer on many of Modest Mouse's most important recordings, died on December 31, 2022, after a battle with cancer. The band continued under Brock's direction and released An Eraser and a Maze on June 5, 2026. Conceived initially in connection with Brock's side project Ugly Casanova, the album became Modest Mouse's eighth studio album and marked the group's first independent release in many years. Across its history, Modest Mouse has remained notable for turning nervous energy, philosophical uncertainty, and unconventional song structures into accessible, emotionally direct rock music.
