Hot Hot Heat was a Canadian indie rock band formed in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1999. Emerging from the city's underground music scene, the group became known for combining post-punk urgency, new wave keyboards, dance-punk rhythms, and highly melodic songwriting. Their music was energetic and sharply arranged, often balancing jittery guitars and pounding drums with Steve Bays' prominent keyboard parts and distinctive, expressive vocals.
The band's early lineup consisted of Bays, drummer Paul Hawley, bassist Dustin Hawthorne, and vocalist Matty Marnik. In its first phase, Hot Hot Heat played a more abrasive form of hardcore-influenced rock. Marnik later left the group, and Bays took over lead vocals. Guitarist Dante DeCaro joined in 2001, helping the band move toward the more melodic and rhythmically sophisticated sound that would define its breakthrough period.
Hot Hot Heat attracted the attention of Seattle independent label Sub Pop, which signed the band in 2001. The group released the EP *Knock Knock Knock* in 2002, followed later that year by its debut full-length album, *Make Up the Breakdown*. Produced by Jack Endino, the album presented a compact, restless style built from sharp guitar lines, fast-moving rhythms, keyboard hooks, and memorable vocal melodies. Songs such as "Bandages" and "Talk to Me, Dance With Me" brought the band substantial radio and music television exposure, particularly in the United States and Canada. *Make Up the Breakdown* became one of the better-known records associated with the early-2000s dance-punk and post-punk revival.
The compilation *Scenes One Through Thirteen*, issued in 2002, collected earlier material and documented the band's transition from its rougher beginnings to its emerging pop-oriented sound. Hot Hot Heat subsequently signed a major-label deal with Warner Bros. Records. *Elevator*, released in 2005, expanded the group's palette with a more polished production style and a greater emphasis on guitars and large-scale arrangements. The album included "Goodnight Goodnight" and "Middle of Nowhere." DeCaro announced his departure during the album's production and was replaced on tour by Luke Paquin. DeCaro later became associated with Wolf Parade and other projects.
Hot Hot Heat continued to develop its sound on *Happiness Ltd.* in 2007. The album retained the band's kinetic songwriting but introduced broader pop textures and more elaborate arrangements. During the following years, the group worked on new material while establishing its own studio. The resulting *Future Breeds*, released in 2010 through Dangerbird and Dine Alone, incorporated electronic elements and unusual rhythmic ideas without abandoning the band's preference for concise, hook-driven songs.
After limited public activity during the 2010s, Hot Hot Heat released the single "Mayor of the City" in 2013. In 2016, the band issued the self-titled *Hot Hot Heat*, a ten-track album that was announced as its final release. The group then ended its active run. Bays later worked with projects including Mounties and Fur Trade, while other members pursued separate musical activities.
Hot Hot Heat briefly reunited in late 2023 with Bays, Hawley, DeCaro, and Parker Bossley, releasing the single "Shock Me" on December 1, 2023. Plans for further recordings and live performances were abandoned in January 2024 when Bays withdrew from the reunion. Despite its relatively compact discography, Hot Hot Heat remains associated with the early-2000s revival of stylish, danceable alternative rock and is best remembered for the nervy, melodic immediacy of *Make Up the Breakdown*.
