Heather Headley (born October 5, 1974) is a Trinidadian-American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress whose career has moved between Broadway, R&B, gospel, television, and film. Born in Barataria, Trinidad and Tobago, she moved with her family to Fort Wayne, Indiana, at the age of 15. She later attended Northwestern University, where she developed her skills as a performer while appearing in musical theater productions.
Headley made her Broadway debut in the original production of The Lion King, which opened in 1997. She originated the role of Nala, bringing a powerful, controlled singing voice and a strong dramatic presence to the Disney musical. The production established her as one of Broadway's leading performers and gave her an early association with large-scale musical theater.
Her defining stage role arrived in Aida, the Elton John and Tim Rice musical inspired by Giuseppe Verdi's opera. Headley originated the title role in the Broadway production, which opened in 2000. Her performance combined vocal intensity with a commanding theatrical style, and she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical as well as the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical. Aida also allowed her to record songs such as "Written in the Stars," "The Gods Love Nubia," and "Easy as Life," expanding her audience beyond the theater world.
Headley began her recording career with This Is Who I Am in 2002. Released by RCA Records, the album presented her as a contemporary R&B singer while retaining the vocal discipline associated with her stage work. Songs such as "He Is" and "I Wish I Wasn't" introduced a more personal, relationship-centered side of her artistry. Her second album, In My Mind (2006), continued in an adult R&B direction and included the title track, which became one of her best-known recordings.
She then turned toward contemporary gospel with Audience of One (2009). The album included original material alongside gospel interpretations and earned Headley the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album in 2010. Her fourth studio album, Only One in the World (2012), returned to secular R&B and soul, combining new songs with covers including "Superwoman" and "Run to You."
Headley returned to musical theater in London as the lead of the West End production of The Bodyguard, performing material associated with Whitney Houston. She later appeared on Broadway as Shug Avery in the 2015 revival of The Color Purple. The role marked a significant return to New York theater after a lengthy period focused on recording and concert work.
Her screen career has included appearances in television series and films, including the drama series Chicago Med, in which she played hospital executive Gwen Garrett, and the Disney animated project The Lion Guard. She also portrayed gospel singer Clara Ward in the biographical film Respect (2021). Since 2020, Headley has starred as attorney Helen Decatur in the Netflix drama series Sweet Magnolias. Across her work, she is recognized for bringing the same combination of vocal authority, emotional directness, and theatrical precision to music, stage performance, and screen acting.
