Zakk Wylde is the professional name of American guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer Jeffrey Phillip Wielandt, born January 14, 1967, in Bayonne, New Jersey. He became one of the most recognizable figures in modern hard rock and heavy metal through his long association with Ozzy Osbourne and his leadership of Black Label Society. His playing combines heavy metal power with blues phrasing, Southern rock attitude, and a highly physical, expressive approach to guitar.
Wylde began playing guitar as a child and developed his technique through intensive self-directed practice. As a teenager, he performed with local New Jersey bands, including Stone Henge and Zyris. His career changed in 1987, when he sent a demo to Ozzy Osbourne and won an audition for the singer's band. Wylde made his recording debut with Osbourne on *No Rest for the Wicked* in 1988, contributing aggressive riffs and prominent lead guitar work. He remained with Osbourne through such major releases as *No More Tears* (1991) and *Ozzmosis* (1995), helping define the heavier sound of Osbourne's later solo career.
Wylde briefly expanded beyond the Ozzy camp with Pride & Glory, a power trio that blended metal with blues, country, and Southern rock. The group released its self-titled album in 1994 before disbanding. He then moved into a more personal and less overtly metallic direction with *Book of Shadows* (1996), a largely acoustic solo album that highlighted his singing, piano playing, songwriting, and taste for reflective balladry. The record demonstrated that his musical identity extended well beyond fast solos and heavily distorted riffs.
In 1998, Wylde formed Black Label Society, initially recording the group's debut, *Sonic Brew*, with drummer Phil Ondich. Black Label Society soon developed into his principal creative vehicle. Across albums such as *Stronger Than Death* (2000), *1919 Eternal* (2002), *The Blessed Hellride* (2003), *Mafia* (2005), *Order of the Black* (2010), *Catacombs of the Black Vatican* (2014), and *Doom Crew Inc.* (2021), the band established a durable sound built from thick guitar tones, blues-rooted grooves, anthemic choruses, and emotionally direct songs. Wylde's role has typically encompassed lead and rhythm guitar, vocals, songwriting, and production.
His visual identity is closely tied to a black-and-white bullseye design used on his guitars, most famously a Les Paul Custom known as "The Grail." The image became a signature as recognizable as his long hair, beard, leather clothing, and forceful stage presence. Musically, his style is marked by wide vibrato, pinch harmonics, rapid pentatonic runs, sustained bends, and a preference for making technically demanding passages sound spontaneous and visceral.
Although his work with Black Label Society remained central, Wylde returned to the stage with Osbourne on several occasions after their initial collaboration, including the 2000s and later reunion appearances. Following the deaths of Pantera members Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, Wylde joined the surviving members of Pantera for a touring lineup beginning in 2022, with Charlie Benante on drums. He has also performed with Zakk Sabbath, a Black Sabbath tribute project, and participated in guitar showcase tours such as Generation Axe.
Black Label Society's twelfth studio album, *Engines of Demolition*, was released on March 27, 2026. The album continues Wylde's established balance of crushing riffs, bluesy leads, and vulnerable songwriting, and includes "Ozzy's Song," a tribute to his longtime mentor and collaborator. Across four decades, Wylde has remained notable not for constant stylistic reinvention, but for refining a distinct musical language and carrying it consistently from the Ozzy Osbourne catalog to his own band and solo work.
