William Robert Young (born 20 January 1979) is an English singer, songwriter and actor. He became nationally known after winning the first series of the ITV talent show Pop Idol in 2002. His victory launched one of the most durable British pop careers to emerge from the early-2000s reality television boom. Young has since combined mainstream pop success with work in theatre, film, television and writing.
Young studied politics at the University of Exeter before turning toward performance and enrolling at the Arts Educational Schools in Chiswick, where he trained in musical theatre. He put his studies on hold to enter Pop Idol, ultimately defeating Gareth Gates in the final. His double A-side debut single, "Anything Is Possible" and "Evergreen", became an immediate number-one hit and was recognized as the fastest-selling debut single in the United Kingdom at the time. He also represented the United Kingdom in World Idol, finishing fifth with a performance of "Light My Fire".
His debut album, From Now On, followed in 2002 and reached number one in the UK. It established Young as a polished pop vocalist with a style that drew on contemporary pop, soul and adult-oriented balladry. The album also included his version of "Light My Fire", which became another number-one single, and "The Long and Winding Road", a chart-topping collaboration with Gareth Gates.
Young's second album, Friday's Child (2003), marked a major step forward. More confident and stylistically varied than its predecessor, it produced several of his best-known songs, including "Leave Right Now", "Your Game" and the title track. "Leave Right Now" became one of his signature recordings, while "Your Game" earned the BRIT Award for British Single in 2005. Young's vocal control and understated performance style helped him move beyond the usual limitations of television talent-show fame.
He continued his commercial run with Keep On (2005), Let It Go (2008) and Echoes (2011). These records expanded his use of electronic production, dance-pop textures and collaborative songwriting. Echoes included "Jealousy", another prominent single, and demonstrated Young's interest in a more modern, studio-shaped sound. His later albums included 85% Proof (2015), which became his fourth UK number-one album, Lexicon (2019), and Crying on the Bathroom Floor (2021), an album built around reimagined versions of songs associated with female pop performers.
In 2022, Young marked two decades in music with 20 Years: The Greatest Hits, which combined his major singles with new material. His ninth studio album, Light It Up, was released on 9 August 2024 and returned to soulful pop, drawing on elements of 1970s and 1980s production while retaining a contemporary finish. The album included the singles "Falling Deep", "Midnight" and "Light It Up".
Acting has been an important parallel strand of Young's career. He appeared in the film Mrs Henderson Presents (2005), took television roles in productions including Skins and Bedlam, and competed on Strictly Come Dancing. His most prominent stage role came as the Emcee in the 2012-13 West End revival of Cabaret, for which he received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination. He later appeared in the play Song from Far Away and continued to work in television, including the crime drama McDonald & Dodds.
Young has also written books about his experiences and wellbeing, and has used his public profile to discuss mental health and emotional resilience. His career is notable for the way it has developed from television fame into a sustained body of pop recordings and varied performance work.
