James Blunt, born James Hillier Blount on February 22, 1974, in Tidworth, Wiltshire, England, is an English singer, songwriter, musician, and former British Army officer. His music is generally associated with pop rock, soft rock, and contemporary singer-songwriter traditions. Blunt became an international star in the mid-2000s through his distinctive high tenor, emotionally direct lyrics, and melodic piano- and guitar-led arrangements.
Blunt studied aerospace manufacturing and sociology at the University of Bristol on an Army scholarship before training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He served in the British Army from 1996 to 2002, eventually reaching the rank of captain in the Life Guards. His military career included service with NATO forces in Kosovo. After leaving the Army, he moved decisively toward music, performing in London and working to establish himself as a singer and songwriter.
His breakthrough came after a performance at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, brought him to the attention of singer and producer Linda Perry. Blunt followed the debut with All the Lost Souls in 2007. Although it did not duplicate the extraordinary impact of Back to Bedlam, it continued his international chart success with songs including "1973," "Same Mistake," and "Carry You Home." The album showed a broader pop-rock palette while retaining his emphasis on romantic uncertainty, regret, and personal reflection.
His third album, Some Kind of Trouble (2010), presented a brighter and more optimistic side, particularly on songs such as "Stay the Night" and "I'll Be Your Man." Moon Landing (2013) returned to a more reflective sound and produced the popular single "Bonfire Heart." Later releases included The Afterlove (2017), which involved collaborations with songwriters and producers such as Ed Sheeran, Once Upon a Mind (2019), and Who We Used to Be (2023).
Beyond his records, Blunt has maintained a substantial touring career and became known for a dry, self-deprecating public manner that contrasted with the earnestness of his best-known songs.
