Wiki

Biography

Wheatus is an American rock band formed in 1995 in Northport, New York. The group was founded by singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter Brendan B. Brown, whose witty, melodic songs combine elements of alternative rock, pop punk, power pop, and post-grunge. Although the band's lineup has changed repeatedly, Brown has remained its central creative figure.

Wheatus began as a small Long Island project involving Brown, his brother Peter Brown on drums, multi-instrumentalist Philip A. Jimenez, and bassist Rich Liegey. The band recorded much of its self-titled debut album in the basement of Brown's mother's house, producing the material independently before signing with Columbia Records. Released in August 2000, Wheatus introduced the group's rough-edged but highly accessible sound, built around loud guitars, conversational vocals, humorous lyrics, and strong pop hooks.

The album's defining song was Teenage Dirtbag, a narrative about adolescent alienation, fantasy, and outsider identity. The single became a major international success, reaching number two on the UK Singles Chart and number one in Australia, while also becoming a prominent alternative-rock hit in the United States. Its accompanying music video helped establish Wheatus as part of the early-2000s pop-rock landscape. The album later achieved platinum status in the United Kingdom.

Wheatus followed the breakthrough with a cover of Erasure's A Little Respect. Rather than simply reproducing the synth-pop original, the band recast it as an energetic guitar-driven anthem. The single reached number three in the United Kingdom and broadened the group's audience. Other tracks from the debut, including Leroy and Wannabe Gangstar, reinforced the band's reputation for irreverent storytelling and deliberately scruffy pop-rock.

The band's relationship with Columbia became increasingly difficult after the debut. Hand Over Your Loved Ones, released in 2003, received limited support and was later reissued independently under the title Suck Fony. Wheatus also released Too Soon Monsoon in 2005, continuing Brown's preference for homegrown production and unconventional song structures while moving further away from the concise commercial formula of the debut.

During the late 2000s, Wheatus became increasingly independent in its approach to recording and distribution. The Pop, Songs & Death project developed into two studio releases, The Lightning and The Jupiter, recorded largely live in the studio between 2008 and 2010. The material was later collected as Pop, Songs & Death. The band followed it with The Valentine LP in 2013, which expanded its sound with longer arrangements, theatrical textures, and a more openly ambitious songwriting style.

Wheatus has remained an active touring band, with Brown frequently engaging audiences through fan-requested songs and acoustic performances. The group's continued visibility has been driven especially by the durability of Teenage Dirtbag, which experienced a major resurgence through social media in the early 2020s. In 2023, the song returned to the UK Top 40 more than two decades after its original release.

The band has also revisited its early material. Wheatus 2020 is a fully re-recorded and reimagined version of the debut album, expanded with additional songs from the group's history. In the mid-2020s, Wheatus continued performing internationally and announced new singles, including Tipsy and Lullaby, connected with a planned seventh album. The band's enduring appeal lies in its combination of punk energy, pop craftsmanship, humor, and an unusually direct connection with listeners who identify with its outsider perspective.
