Third Eye Blind is an American alternative rock band formed in San Francisco, California, in 1993. Led by singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter Stephan Jenkins, the group became one of the defining acts of late-1990s post-grunge and alternative pop-rock. Their music combines bright, radio-ready melodies with darker themes involving addiction, alienation, unstable relationships, and youthful disillusionment.
Jenkins began assembling the band after performing as a solo musician in the Bay Area. Bassist Arion Salazar joined during the early development of the group, while guitarist Kevin Cadogan and drummer Brad Hargreaves became important parts of the lineup in the mid-1990s. The chemistry between Jenkins' melodic instincts and Cadogan's guitar work helped shape the band's early sound, which moved between muscular rock arrangements and carefully constructed pop hooks.
Third Eye Blind's breakthrough arrived with their self-titled debut album, released in 1997. The record was introduced by "Semi-Charmed Life," an upbeat, guitar-driven single whose buoyant surface contrasted with its bleak subject matter. The song became a major modern rock and pop hit, while "How's It Going to Be," "Jumper," and "Losing a Whole Year" extended the album's commercial run. The record eventually became one of the most successful alternative rock debuts of its era, establishing the band as a major presence on radio, MTV, and the concert circuit.
The group followed with Blue in 1999. Although it did not repeat the extraordinary impact of the debut, the album showed a broader and more mature approach to songwriting. "Never Let You Go" became its most prominent hit, while songs such as "Deep Inside of You" and "Anything" reflected the band's growing interest in emotional tension and more polished production. Extensive touring followed, but the period also brought internal changes. Cadogan departed in 2001 and was replaced by Tony Fredianelli, beginning a succession of lineup shifts that would become a recurring feature of the band's history.
Out of the Vein appeared in 2003, led by "Blinded (When I See You)." The album reached the Billboard 200 but received less promotional support than its predecessors, arriving during a difficult period for Elektra Records. After a prolonged period of writing and touring, Third Eye Blind returned with Ursa Major in 2009. Released through Jenkins' Mega Collider Records, it debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and marked a strong independent-era comeback.
The band continued to record and tour through the 2010s, issuing Dopamine in 2015, the We Are Drugs EP in 2016, and Thanks for Everything in 2018. Screamer followed in 2019, with Billy Corgan contributing to the album's creative process. The seventh studio album, Our Bande Apart, arrived in 2021 and included the single "Again," featuring Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast. In 2022, the band released Unplugged, an acoustic reworking of selected material.
Third Eye Blind's later career has balanced nostalgia for its breakthrough period with continuing creative activity. The group has remained a regular live attraction, including the Summer Gods tours and a 2024 run with Yellowcard and A R I Z O N A. In March 2025, Third Eye Blind appeared on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series and released the new single "Like a Lullaby." Through changing personnel and musical fashions, the band's identity has remained closely tied to Jenkins' expressive songwriting, the group's melodic guitar sound, and a catalog that places catchy pop structures alongside unusually candid subject matter.
