Wiki

Biography

Stephan Eicher (born August 17, 1960, in Munchenbuchsee, Switzerland) is a Swiss singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer whose work connects post-punk, electronic pop, chanson, folk and rock. A distinctly multilingual artist, he has recorded in French, German, Swiss German, English, Italian and Romansh. Although his music has reached audiences across Europe, his most enduring commercial success has come through French-language songs.

Eicher began making music in Zurich, where he studied composition and became involved with experimental electronic and punk-oriented groups. In the late 1970s, he formed the Noise Boys and later worked with his brother Martin in Grauzone. The group's 1981 single "Eisbar" became a defining track of the Neue Deutsche Welle and introduced Eicher to a wider audience in German-speaking Europe. Its spare, synthetic sound and detached vocal style foreshadowed aspects of his later solo work, even as his career soon moved in a more melodic and chanson-oriented direction.

Eicher's first solo releases included the 1980 project Spielt Noise Boys and the album Souvenir. He established himself more clearly with Les Chansons bleues in 1983, an album shaped by electronic textures, romantic melancholy and his growing interest in French songwriting. I Tell This Night followed in 1985 and produced "Two People in a Room," his first major French chart success. The more introspective Silence appeared in 1987 and included "Combien de temps," further strengthening his position as an artist able to combine programmed arrangements with the emotional directness of the chanson.

A major turning point came with My Place in 1989. From this album onward, Eicher developed a long-running creative partnership with French novelist Philippe Djian, who supplied many of the French lyrics that became central to Eicher's identity. The collaboration helped produce his breakthrough album Engelberg in 1991. Named after the Swiss resort associated with its recording, Engelberg reached number one in Switzerland and generated several of his best-known songs, including "Dejeuner en paix," "Pas d'ami (comme toi)," "Hemmige" and "Tu ne me dois rien." The album balanced electronic production with guitars, live drums and a warmer, more expansive pop sound.

Eicher continued to broaden his musical palette on Carcassonne (1993), 1000 Vies (1996) and Louanges (1999). His arrangements increasingly incorporated folk, world music and orchestral colors, while collaborations with musicians such as Manu Katche and Pino Palladino added rhythmic and instrumental depth. He also explored live performance through Non ci badar, guarda e passa... and later released the career compilation Hotel*s in 2001.

During the 2000s, Eicher moved between studio albums, concert projects, soundtrack work and collaborations. He composed music for the film Monsieur N. and released Taxi Europa in 2003, followed by Eldorado in 2007. Later projects included L'Envolee, the collaborative Song Book with writer Martin Suter, and Huh! with the brass ensemble Traktorkestar. Homeless Songs (2019) presented a quieter and more reflective side of his songwriting, while Ode (2022) reunited his melodic instincts with contemporary production.

Eicher's later work has retained his interest in artistic reinvention. In 2023, he recorded Kunscht isch geng es Risiko, a collection of songs by Swiss songwriter Mani Matter with Roman Nowka's Hot 3. His 2025 album Poussiere d'or continued his collaboration with Philippe Djian and Martin Suter. Across more than four decades, Eicher has remained known for treating language as an instrument, moving freely between cultures while keeping his songwriting personal, understated and musically adventurous.
