Biography

Soulfly is a Brazilian-American heavy metal band formed in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1997 by vocalist and guitarist Max Cavalera after his departure from Sepultura. Built around Cavalera's distinctive shouted vocals, downtuned guitar riffs and interest in percussion and traditional music, the band became one of the most enduring projects to emerge from the late 1990s metal scene. Its music has moved between groove metal, thrash metal, nu metal and hardcore, while repeatedly returning to Brazilian rhythms, spiritual imagery and themes of resistance.

Cavalera assembled the original Soulfly lineup with drummer Roy "Rata" Mayorga, bassist Marcelo "Cello" Dias and guitarist Jackson Bandeira, also known as Lucio Maia. The self-titled debut appeared on Roadrunner Records in 1998. It introduced a band that was more open-ended than a conventional post-Sepultura project, combining aggressive metal with tribal percussion, electronic touches and numerous guest appearances. The album included contributions from members of Fear Factory, Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Cypress Hill and other acts, helping Soulfly establish a broad musical identity from the beginning. It also became a commercial success, reaching the Billboard 200 and eventually earning gold certification in the United States.

Soulfly's second album, Primitive (2000), pushed the collaborative and experimental approach further. Its guests included Chino Moreno, Corey Taylor, Sean Lennon and Tom Araya, while songs such as "Back to the Primitive" and "Jumpdafuckup" gave the band some of its most recognizable material. The album also marked Soulfly's strongest early connection to the nu metal audience, although Cavalera's songwriting retained the heavier groove and rhythmic attack associated with his earlier work.

With 3 (2002), Cavalera took a more direct role in production, and the band's sound became darker and more focused. Prophecy (2004) brought a stronger emphasis on thrash, traditional heavy metal and Brazilian musical elements, including performances by musicians from Serbia and Brazil. Dark Ages (2005) continued that harsher direction, reflecting a period of upheaval in the band's lineup and a more severe overall atmosphere. These records established that Soulfly was not tied permanently to one trend: Cavalera used the group as a flexible platform for changing personnel and recurring musical reinvention.

The following albums maintained that balance between groove and experimentation. Conquer (2008), Omen (2010) and Enslaved (2012) leaned into fast, punishing riffs, while Savages (2013) and Archangel (2015) expanded the band's use of biblical, historical and mythological imagery. Ritual (2018) returned to the band's characteristic tribal grooves and featured the continuing development of Cavalera's son Zyon as drummer. Zyon subsequently became a central member of Soulfly's live and studio identity.

Totem (2022) presented a compact and forceful version of the band's sound, emphasizing heavy riffs, percussion and direct songwriting. The thirteenth studio album, Chama, was released in 2025 by Nuclear Blast Records. It marked a renewed focus on Cavalera's Brazilian roots and included contributions from musicians such as Dino Cazares, Michael Amott and Todd Jones. The lineup featured Max Cavalera, Zyon Cavalera, guitarist Mike DeLeon and bassist Igor Amadeus Cavalera.

Although Soulfly has undergone extensive personnel changes, Cavalera has remained its constant creative force. The band's lasting importance lies in its ability to connect extreme metal with groove, world music and personal conviction without abandoning the physical impact of its riffs. Across more than two decades, Soulfly has functioned both as a continuation of Cavalera's work in Sepultura and as a distinct vehicle for experimentation, collaboration and renewal.
