Biography

Skee-Lo is the stage name of American rapper, songwriter, producer, actor, and television host Antoine Roundtree, born March 27, 1975, in Chicago, Illinois. He later moved with his family to California, where he developed his interest in hip-hop and began performing in the Los Angeles open-mic scene. In the early 1990s, he was associated with the Good Life Cafe, a venue known for nurturing a wide range of alternative and independent West Coast rap talent.

Skee-Lo's music stood apart from much of the commercially dominant rap of the mid-1990s. His writing favored clean language, humor, everyday frustrations, and self-deprecating storytelling rather than the gangsta rap themes that were prominent at the time. He also handled much of the production for his early recordings, developing songs for regular live performances before attracting the attention of Scotti Brothers and Sunshine Records.

His breakthrough came with "I Wish," released in 1995. Built around a series of playful fantasies about confidence, success, and status, the song turned personal insecurity into an accessible pop-rap hook. It became a major radio and MTV success, reaching No. 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and charting internationally. The accompanying music video reinforced the song's comic tone through visual gags and exaggerated contrasts, helping make Skee-Lo one of the most recognizable new rap acts of the year.

The debut album, *I Wish*, followed in 1995. Although the title track remained its defining hit, the album presented Skee-Lo as more than a one-song novelty performer. Its tracks combined relaxed production, melodic choruses, straightforward rhymes, and observations about ambition and ordinary life. The album earned two nominations at the 38th Annual Grammy Awards: Best Rap Album and Rap Solo Performance for "I Wish." Neither nomination resulted in a win, but they confirmed the song's place within the mainstream rap conversation.

Skee-Lo also contributed "Top of the Stairs" to the soundtrack of the 1995 film *Money Train*. The song extended his run of visibility and received its own music video. In the following years, he broadened his work beyond recording. He appeared in television programs including *Baywatch Nights*, *Goode Behavior*, and the television series *Dangerous Minds*, and worked as an on-air personality for MTV programs such as *The Beach House* and *The Grind*. He also co-wrote "I'll Be Your Everything" for the pop group Youngstown, a song included in the soundtrack to the 1999 film *Inspector Gadget*.

After a period away from the spotlight connected to a dispute with his record label, Skee-Lo returned with the album *I Can't Stop*, released in 2001. He later issued *Fresh Ideas* in 2012 through his independent Skeelo Musik imprint. These releases demonstrated a continuing interest in self-directed production and independent control rather than a conventional major-label career.

Skee-Lo has remained closely identified with "I Wish," a song whose blend of wit, modesty, and catchy phrasing gave it a lasting place in 1990s pop culture. He has continued to release music and work in artist development, including the 2024 single "Slow Down," while maintaining a career that spans recording, songwriting, television, acting, and music entrepreneurship.
