Sister Bliss is the stage name of Ayalah Deborah Bentovim, a British DJ, keyboardist, pianist, songwriter, record producer, and composer. Born in London on December 30, 1970, she became one of the most recognizable women in British electronic music through her work with Faithless, the influential dance group she formed with Rollo Armstrong, Maxi Jazz, and Jamie Catto in 1995.
Her musical background includes piano, violin, saxophone, and bass guitar, but it was through DJing and electronic production that she found her principal artistic identity. By the time Faithless was established, Bliss had already gained experience in the British club scene and was regarded as one of the country's early prominent female house DJs. Her command of keyboards and synthesizers gave Faithless a strong melodic center, balancing Rollo's studio production with the lyrical presence of Maxi Jazz.
Faithless made its debut with the album Reverence in 1996. The record introduced the group's distinctive fusion of progressive house, trance, hip-hop, and reflective songwriting. Its singles "Salva Mea" and "Insomnia" became international dance anthems, with Bliss's synth work helping to define the latter's tense, insistent atmosphere. Faithless developed a sound that could function equally well in clubs, on radio, and in large concert settings, while retaining an unusually thoughtful and sometimes spiritual quality for mainstream dance music.
The group continued its success with albums including Sunday 8PM (1998), Outrospective (2001), and No Roots (2004). Faithless became known for combining expansive electronic arrangements with socially conscious and philosophical lyrics, most often delivered by Maxi Jazz. Although Rollo generally operated as a studio-based member, Bliss became a central public figure in the live band, performing keyboards and DJing during the group's extensive tours. Faithless twice appeared on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury and built a reputation as one of Britain's leading live electronic acts.
Alongside her Faithless work, Bliss developed a solo career and continued to collaborate with other artists. Her solo releases include the compilation Headliners: 02 (2001) and the album Nightmoves (2008). She has also worked with performers such as Dido, Boy George, Cat Power, Robert Smith, The Temper Trap, and Example. Her production and remix work has extended beyond her own recordings, including collaborations with Rollo on projects connected to the wider electronic music scene.
Bliss has also composed for film, television, and theater. Her credits include music associated with The Beach, Sex and the City 2, Crossing the Line, Life Begins, and the film Knife Fight. These projects reflect the breadth of her musical practice, which moves between club-focused production, atmospheric scoring, and more traditional compositional settings.
After Faithless initially stopped touring in 2011, Bliss remained active as a DJ, broadcaster, composer, and solo artist. She reunited with the group for selected performances and later returned to the Faithless project following Maxi Jazz's death in 2022. New live shows introduced vocalists including Amelia Fox and Nathan Ball, while preserving the group's established musical identity. Faithless subsequently released Champion Sound in 2025, marking another chapter in the band's continuing history.
Sister Bliss's importance lies not only in her role within Faithless, but also in the way she helped establish the keyboard-playing DJ and producer as a visible creative force in electronic music. Through composition, performance, remixing, and live direction, she has remained closely associated with the melodic and emotional dimensions of British dance music.
