Joseph Armand Roch Voisine (born March 26, 1963) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, guitarist, actor, and radio and television host. Born in Edmundston, New Brunswick, and raised in Saint-Basile, he developed a career that moves between French and English pop, adult contemporary music, country-influenced material, and romantic ballads. His bilingual identity has been central to his appeal, allowing him to build a substantial audience in Quebec, France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Canada more broadly.
Voisine made his first major public appearance in 1986, performing before a large Canada Day crowd at La Ronde amusement park in Montreal. He gained additional exposure as the host of the television program Top Jeunesse in 1988 and as Danny Ross in the popular Quebec television series Lance et Compte. In June 1989, he released his breakthrough album, Helene. The title song became his signature recording, while the album itself turned him into one of the most successful francophone pop artists of the period. In France, Helene reached number one on the Top 50 for nine consecutive weeks, and the album sold approximately three million copies across its principal markets.
The success of Helene created what French-language media called "Rochmania." Voisine's early 1990s tours drew large crowds throughout Europe, including a major Paris performance in 1992 that was broadcast nationally. His second album, Double, reflected his bilingual repertoire by combining French and English material. Europe Tour, released in 1992, documented his growing international concert audience and included "La Legende Oochigeas," one of his best-known French-language songs. During this period, he received the Victoires de la musique award for francophone Album of the Year and became a Knight of France's Order of Arts and Letters.
Voisine also pursued an English-language career. His collaboration with producer David Foster led to the album I'll Always Be There in 1993, which sold more than one million copies. He followed it with Coup de tete, a French-language album, and Kissing Rain, an English album recorded partly in Los Angeles with musicians including Richard Marx. In 1994, Voisine won the Juno Award for Male Vocalist of the Year. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1997.
During the late 1990s and 2000s, albums such as Chaque feu, Higher, Je te serai fidele, and Sauf si l'amour maintained his presence in both French and English markets. Je te serai fidele became particularly successful in France, Switzerland, and Belgium. He also recorded separate French and English Christmas albums and continued to work in television and live performance. His humanitarian activities included representing UNICEF on a mission to Africa, while his achievements were recognized with an honorary doctorate from the University of Moncton in 2007.
A major later project was the Americana series, beginning in 2008. Recorded in Nashville, the albums revisited North American standards and connected country, roots, and adult contemporary influences with Voisine's polished pop style. The series renewed his concert career in Canada and Europe. He later released the English album Movin' On Maybe, participated in the Forever Gentlemen projects, and issued the French-language album Devant nous in 2017.
Voisine continued to revisit and reshape his catalog through acoustic shows, anniversary releases, and live recordings. In 2024, he marked 35 years of Helene with a special edition featuring the previously unreleased song "Encore." The anniversary concert series extended into 2025. That year, he was named a Knight of the National Order of Quebec. With more than 15 million albums sold according to the Quebec government, Voisine remains one of the most commercially successful bilingual voices in Canadian popular music.
