Katie Melua is a British singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist whose music combines elements of jazz, blues, folk-pop and adult contemporary songwriting. Born Ketevan Melua on September 16, 1984, in Kutaisi, Georgia, she spent part of her childhood in Tbilisi and Batumi before moving with her family to Belfast, Northern Ireland. She later relocated to London, where she attended the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology.
Melua began performing publicly as a teenager, appearing on the British television program *Mad for It* at the age of 15. Her early musical interests included jazz, blues and folk, with Eva Cassidy, Joni Mitchell, Billie Holiday and Bob Dylan among the artists who influenced her development. Her tribute to Cassidy, "Faraway Voice," helped attract the attention of songwriter and producer Mike Batt. Batt signed Melua to his Dramatico label and became an important collaborator during the first phase of her career.
Melua made her recorded debut with *Call Off the Search* in 2003. The album presented her warm, restrained vocal style through a mixture of original songs and carefully chosen covers, including material associated with John Mayall, Randy Newman and "Lilac Wine." The single "The Closest Thing to Crazy" became a major British hit after receiving regular radio exposure, and the album eventually reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. Its success established Melua as one of the most prominent new voices in British pop.
Her second album, *Piece by Piece*, followed in 2005 and expanded her profile internationally. Built around jazz-influenced pop, folk textures and polished production, it included "Nine Million Bicycles," one of her best-known songs. The album also featured more of Melua's own songwriting, including the title track, and became another UK number one. Its commercial performance made Melua one of the UK's best-selling female recording artists of the mid-2000s.
With *Pictures* in 2007, Melua took a larger role in the writing while continuing her creative partnership with Batt. The album produced the singles "If You Were a Sailboat" and "Mary Pickford," and was followed by the live release *Live at the O2 Arena* in 2009. Her fourth studio album, *The House* (2010), marked a significant change in sound. Produced by William Orbit, it introduced more electronic and dramatic arrangements and included the single "The Flood."
Melua returned to a more orchestral style on *Secret Symphony* (2012), an album largely built around interpretations of songs by other writers. *Ketevan* (2013), named after her Georgian birth name, combined new original material with continued orchestral and jazz-pop influences. In 2016, she recorded *In Winter* in Georgia with the Gori Women's Choir. The album connected her contemporary songwriting with Georgian choral traditions and seasonal repertoire.
Her later work became increasingly personal and exploratory. *Album No. 8* (2020) was her first album to feature lyrics written entirely by Melua and used a more intimate indie-pop palette. She followed it with the collaborative project *Aerial Objects* with Simon Goff in 2022 and the studio album *Love & Money* in 2023. A live album recorded at London's Royal Albert Hall was released in 2024. In 2025, Melua continued revisiting her catalog while issuing new material, including the single "Half Full." Across her career, she has maintained a distinctive balance between accessible pop craft, understated performance and sophisticated acoustic and orchestral arrangements.
