The All-American Rejects are an American rock band formed in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in 1999 by vocalist and bassist Tyson Ritter and guitarist Nick Wheeler. Their combination of energetic guitars, melodic hooks, emotionally direct lyrics, and polished pop-rock production made them one of the most recognizable bands associated with the early-2000s pop-punk and alternative-rock boom.
Ritter and Wheeler began writing and recording while still in high school. An early self-produced demo helped establish the band's identity, and the group later signed with Doghouse Records. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2002 and reissued by DreamWorks Records in 2003. The album's success turned the band from a regional act into a national presence. "Swing, Swing," with its prominent string arrangement and dramatic breakup theme, became their breakthrough single, while "The Last Song" further introduced their theatrical, emotionally charged approach. The album was eventually certified platinum in the United States.
The band's commercial position strengthened with Move Along in 2005. The record expanded their sound without abandoning the concise songwriting that had defined their debut. "Dirty Little Secret" paired a bright, highly memorable chorus with lyrics about concealed relationships, while the title track became an anthem of persistence and self-reinvention. "It Ends Tonight" showed a more reflective side of the group and reached a wide audience through radio and music television. Move Along was certified multi-platinum, confirming the All-American Rejects as more than a one-hit success.
Their third album, When the World Comes Down, arrived in 2008. It presented a broader and more polished production style, with arrangements that moved beyond straightforward pop-punk. The album's lead single, "Gives You Hell," became the band's biggest hit, reaching the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. Its sharply humorous music video, built around an antagonistic relationship between neighbors, reinforced the song's appeal and helped make it a defining pop-rock single of its era. Other tracks, including "The Wind Blows" and "I Wanna," reflected the band's continuing interest in balancing radio-friendly melodies with darker or more restless emotions.
The fourth studio album, Kids in the Street, followed in 2012. It retained the band's melodic instincts while incorporating a more varied palette of rock, pop, and electronic textures. After the album, the group entered a quieter period in terms of full-length releases, although it continued to perform and issue individual songs. In 2017, the band released "Sweat," and in 2019 it returned with the three-song release Send Her to Heaven, its first material for Epitaph Records.
The All-American Rejects later emphasized live performance and direct contact with their audience. Their 2023 Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour marked their first proper headline tour in more than a decade. In 2025, the band attracted renewed attention with a series of free, unconventional pop-up performances known as the House Party Tour, staged in settings including a cornfield and a residential neighborhood.
The band's fifth studio album, Sandbox, was released independently on May 15, 2026. It marked their first full-length album in 14 years and presented a group reconnecting with the lively, unvarnished spirit of its early work while exploring a wider range of rock and pop influences. Through changing musical fashions and long gaps between albums, the All-American Rejects have remained defined by the songwriting partnership of Ritter and Wheeler, a strong visual identity, and a catalog of emotionally immediate songs that continue to connect with successive generations of listeners.
