Matthew Sweet is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer whose work helped define the melodic, guitar-driven side of alternative rock in the 1990s. Born Sidney Matthew Sweet on October 6, 1964, in Lincoln, Nebraska, he developed an interest in songwriting and home recording while still in high school. His music combines power pop hooks, jangly guitars, emotional directness, and a harder-edged rock sound.
After graduating in 1983, Sweet moved to Athens, Georgia, then one of the most active centers of American underground music. He played guitar in Oh-OK, the band led by Lynda Stipe, sister of R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe. Sweet also worked with Stipe in the short-lived Community Trolls and formed the duo Buzz of Delight with Oh-OK drummer David Pierce. Buzz of Delight released the EP *Sound Castles* in 1984, which helped Sweet secure a solo contract with Columbia Records.
His debut album, *Inside*, appeared in 1986. Sweet played most of the instruments himself, creating a carefully constructed record that drew on singer-songwriter pop, new wave, and alternative rock. The album received encouraging critical attention but made little commercial impact. His second album, *Earth* (1989), was produced by Fred Maher and included guitar contributions from Robert Quine and Richard Lloyd. It likewise failed to establish Sweet in the mainstream, and he spent part of the period touring as a guitarist with Lloyd Cole.
Sweet's breakthrough came with *Girlfriend* in 1991. Built around strong melodies, distorted guitar interplay, and vulnerable lyrics, the album marked a substantial change from the more studio-centered sound of his first two records. The title song became a signature track, while "I've Been Waiting" and "Divine Intervention" further expanded his audience. The songs' music videos, which used imagery from Japanese animation, received considerable exposure on MTV and became closely associated with the album's success.
The darker *Altered Beast* followed in 1993, featuring prominent work from Quine and Lloyd and a heavier, more confrontational sound. Tracks such as "The Ugly Truth" and "Time Capsule" kept Sweet visible on alternative radio and MTV. In 1995, he released *100% Fun*, produced by Brendan O'Brien. The album balanced dense guitars with direct pop songwriting and included "Sick of Myself," one of his best-known singles.
Sweet continued to explore different textures on *Blue Sky on Mars* (1997) and *In Reverse* (1999), while retaining his emphasis on melody and layered guitar arrangements. During the 2000s, he pursued less conventional projects, including *Kimi Ga Suki * Raifu* and *Living Things*. He also began a well-regarded series of cover albums with Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles. Their *Under the Covers* volumes reinterpret songs from the 1960s through the 1980s with an emphasis on vocal blend and faithful, affectionate arrangements.
Later releases such as *Modern Art* (2011), *Tomorrow Forever* (2017), *Tomorrow's Daughter* (2018), and *Catspaw* (2021) demonstrated his continuing commitment to original guitar pop. On *Catspaw*, Sweet played nearly every instrument, with longtime collaborator Ric Menck providing drums. Across his career, Matthew Sweet has remained known for emotionally candid songwriting, distinctive guitar sound, and a durable connection between underground credibility and classic pop craft.
