Biography

Marc Anthony (born Marco Antonio Muniz on September 16, 1968) is an American singer, songwriter, actor, and producer whose career helped bring contemporary salsa to a broad international audience. Born and raised in New York City by Puerto Rican parents, he developed his musical identity within the city's Latin community while also absorbing freestyle, R&B, pop, and tropical music. His expressive voice, dramatic phrasing, and energetic stage presence later made him one of the best-known performers in Latin music.

Anthony began professionally as a background vocalist and songwriter. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, he worked with freestyle and dance-music artists and recorded with producer and DJ Little Louie Vega. His early experience in New York's club scene gave him a modern vocal style that distinguished him from more traditional salsa singers. Although he initially resisted being identified primarily as a salsa artist, the genre became the foundation of his solo career.

His first major Spanish-language album, Otra nota (1993), established Anthony as an important new voice in tropical music. It was followed by Todo a su tiempo (1995), which strengthened his reputation through polished arrangements and emotionally charged performances. Contra la corriente (1997) became a defining release, pairing romantic songwriting with a sophisticated salsa sound. The album earned major critical and industry recognition and helped position Anthony among the leading figures of the late-1990s salsa revival.

Anthony expanded his audience with his first English-language album, Marc Anthony (1999). The record combined pop ballads and contemporary production with the vocal intensity associated with his Spanish recordings. Songs such as "I Need to Know" and "You Sang to Me" brought him substantial success in the mainstream United States and made him a central figure in the Latin pop crossover of the period. He continued moving between English-language pop and Spanish-language salsa, rather than abandoning either side of his musical identity.

The Spanish albums Libre (2001) and Valio la pena (2004) returned him to the tropical style that had first made him famous, while releases such as Mended (2002) and Amar sin mentiras (2004) explored adult contemporary pop and romantic balladry. His later work includes Iconos (2010), a collection centered on classic Latin songs, 3.0 (2013), Opus (2019), and Pa'lla voy (2022). MUEVENSE (2024) continued his engagement with salsa and dance-oriented Latin music.

Anthony has received multiple Grammy Awards, Latin Grammy Awards, Billboard Latin Music Awards, and Premio Lo Nuestro honors. His influence is especially evident in the scale of his concert tours and in the continued popularity of salsa among younger Latin audiences. He has also maintained a parallel acting career, appearing in films such as Bringing Out the Dead (1999), In the Time of the Butterflies (2001), Man on Fire (2004), El Cantante (2006), and In the Heights (2021). His portrayal of salsa legend Hector Lavoe in El Cantante connected his musical and dramatic work. Across several decades, Marc Anthony has remained a prominent interpreter of salsa, romantic Latin pop, and crossover music.
