Biography

Ethan Green Hawke (born November 6, 1970) is an American actor, writer, director, and filmmaker whose work has moved between mainstream cinema, independent film, television, and theater. Known for his thoughtful, often inward-looking performances, Hawke has built a career around characters struggling with identity, ambition, morality, and the passage of time.

Hawke made his film debut in Joe Dante's science-fiction adventure Explorers (1985), appearing alongside River Phoenix. His breakthrough came with Peter Weir's Dead Poets Society (1989), in which he played Todd Anderson, a shy student encouraged to find his own voice by an inspiring English teacher, played by Robin Williams. The film established Hawke as a serious young actor and led to roles in Dad (1989), White Fang (1991), Waterland (1992), and A Midnight Clear (1992).

In the 1990s, Hawke became associated with a generation of American independent-minded performers. His role as a restless musician and aspiring writer in Reality Bites (1994) made him a defining presence in Generation X cinema. He began his long creative partnership with director Richard Linklater in Before Sunrise (1995), playing Jesse, an American traveler who spends one night in Vienna with a young French woman portrayed by Julie Delpy. The film's conversational style and romantic ambiguity were continued in Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013). Hawke and Delpy co-wrote the latter two films with Linklater, receiving Academy Award nominations for adapted screenplay.

Hawke also worked in more commercial and genre-oriented projects. He starred in the science-fiction thriller Gattaca (1997), appeared in Great Expectations (1998) and Michael Almereyda's contemporary Hamlet (2000), and played a young police officer confronting corruption in Training Day (2001). His performance opposite Denzel Washington earned him an Academy Award nomination for supporting actor. Other notable projects from this period included Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007), Brooklyn's Finest (2009), and the horror films Sinister (2012) and The Purge (2013).

Hawke's collaboration with Linklater continued with Boyhood (2014), filmed over twelve years. As the protagonist's father, Hawke gave a restrained performance that reflected the character's gradual movement from youthful irresponsibility toward maturity. The role brought him another Academy Award nomination. He later received wide critical recognition for playing a troubled minister in Paul Schrader's First Reformed (2017), one of the most severe and psychologically demanding performances of his career.

As a filmmaker, Hawke directed the features Chelsea Walls (2001) and The Hottest State (2006), the latter adapted from his own novel. He also directed documentaries and television projects, including The Last Movie Stars (2022), a documentary series about actors Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. His interest in literature has produced several books, including the novels The Hottest State (1996), Ash Wednesday (2002), and A Bright Ray of Darkness (2021), as well as works of historical fiction and graphic literature.

Theater has remained central to Hawke's career. He co-founded the Malaparte Theatre Company in New York and has appeared in productions of plays by writers including Sam Shepard, Tom Stoppard, Anton Chekhov, and William Shakespeare. His stage work earned a Tony Award nomination for The Coast of Utopia in 2007. In later years, he continued to alternate between ambitious independent projects, major studio productions, television, and theater, including The Good Lord Bird, Moon Knight, The Northman, The Black Phone, Strange Way of Life, and Leave the World Behind.
