Biography

Laurie Anderson (born June 5, 1947) is an American avant-garde artist, composer, musician, filmmaker, and performance artist. Her work combines spoken word, electronic music, visual art, film, theater, poetry, and new technology. Although she became internationally known through the unexpected pop success of "O Superman," Anderson has maintained a career rooted in experimental performance and multimedia presentation.

Born Laura Phillips Anderson in Chicago and raised in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, she studied violin from an early age. She attended Barnard College, where she earned a degree in art history, and later received a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from Columbia University. After completing her education, she began presenting performances in New York during the 1970s. These early works explored the relationship between language, sound, images, and machines, themes that would remain central throughout her career.

Anderson developed a distinctive performance style built around deadpan narration, fragmentary stories, visual projections, electronic textures, and self-designed instruments. Among her best-known inventions are the tape-bow violin, which uses recorded sound and magnetic tape, and the Talking Stick, an electronic device that can store and manipulate sounds. Her performances often treat technology not simply as a tool but as a subject, examining how machines influence communication, memory, politics, and identity.

In 1980, Anderson released "O Superman," an extended electronic composition originally issued as a limited single. Its repetitive vocal pattern, processed voice, and spare electronic arrangement made it unlike conventional pop music, yet the recording reached number two on the British singles chart. The success led to a recording contract with Warner Bros. and to the release of her debut album, Big Science, in 1982. The album drew on United States, a large-scale multimedia performance project that combined music, narration, imagery, and political commentary.

Anderson expanded her approach on albums including Mister Heartbreak, United States Live, Home of the Brave, Strange Angels, and Bright Red. She worked with artists such as Peter Gabriel, Adrian Belew, Brian Eno, and Lou Reed, while continuing to tour with elaborate stage productions. Her concert film Home of the Brave and her score for the film Swimming to Cambodia further demonstrated the breadth of her work.

During the 1990s and 2000s, Anderson continued to create installations, books, performances, and recordings. Life on a String reflected material from her larger theatrical projects, while Homeland presented a darker, politically charged examination of American life. She also created works influenced by Tibetan Buddhist traditions, contemporary technology, and the changing experience of public space.

Anderson directed the feature film Heart of a Dog, which premiered in 2015. The film combines animation, archival material, personal reflections, and philosophical meditation. Her collaboration with the Kronos Quartet, Landfall, addressed environmental catastrophe and the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. In 2019, she released Songs from the Bardo, a work inspired by Tibetan Buddhist ideas of transition and impermanence. Her 2024 album Amelia drew on the life and final flight of aviator Amelia Earhart.

Across more than five decades, Anderson has remained an influential figure in experimental music and performance art. Her importance lies not in one particular medium, but in her ability to connect music, storytelling, visual design, and technology into works that are both intellectually questioning and emotionally direct.
