Wiki

Biography

Kottonmouth Kings are an American hip-hop and rap-rock group from Placentia, California, formed in 1996. Built around rappers D-Loc and Saint Dog, the group developed a distinctly cannabis-centered identity while combining hardcore rap with punk, psychedelic rock, reggae, and other alternative styles. Their music, visual presentation, and independent business activities helped make them one of the most recognizable acts in the underground rap-rock scene of the late 1990s and 2000s.

The group first attracted wider attention with "Suburban Life," a 1997 track included on the soundtrack to the horror-comedy film Scream 2. Its energetic mixture of distorted rock textures, rapid-fire rapping, and rebellious suburban imagery became an early example of the sound that would define the Kings. In early 1998, they issued the EP Stoners Reeking Havoc through their own Suburban Noize operation. Later that year, Royal Highness gave the band a national release through Capitol Records while retaining the independent spirit associated with Suburban Noize.

The early Kottonmouth Kings lineup included D-Loc, Saint Dog, Brad "Daddy X" Xavier, DJ Bobby B, drummer Lou Dog, and performer Pakelika. Rather than functioning as a conventional rap group, the Kings presented themselves as a loose, highly visual collective, with multiple vocalists, DJs, live performers, and collaborators contributing to the overall experience. Their records were often accompanied by videos, merchandise, live releases, and other projects connected to the expanding Suburban Noize brand.

High Society followed in 2000 and became the group's first major commercial breakthrough, reaching number 65 on the Billboard 200. The album included the songs "Peace Not Greed" and "Close Call," and helped establish the group beyond its original California audience. Hidden Stash II: The Kream of the Krop arrived in 2001, followed by Rollin' Stoned in 2002. These releases strengthened the Kings' reputation for prolific output, blunt humor, party-oriented performances, and an outspoken advocacy of cannabis legalization.

During the middle of the 2000s, the band expanded its stylistic and commercial reach. Fire It Up was released in 2004, while the self-titled Kottonmouth Kings appeared in 2005 with guest appearances from Cypress Hill and Tech N9ne. Koast II Koast reached number three on the Billboard Independent Albums chart in 2006, and later releases including Cloud Nine and The Green Album continued the group's fusion of rap, punk energy, reggae influences, and psychedelic production.

The 2010 album Long Live the Kings became one of their strongest charting releases, reaching number 26 on the Billboard 200. Sunrise Sessions explored reggae, dubstep, bluegrass, and jam-band elements, while Mile High returned to a more direct rap-rock approach and included the return of Saint Dog. The group later released Krown Power in 2015 and Kingdom Come in 2018. Saint Dog died in 2020, closing an important chapter in the band's history.

Kottonmouth Kings have continued through changing lineups and periods of interruption. In 2025, the official group presented a configuration led by D-Loc with Judge D, Taxman, and Chucky Chuck, alongside new recordings and live appearances. Their lasting importance lies less in conventional mainstream success than in the durable underground culture they built around independent music, touring, visual spectacle, and a clearly defined stoner-rap identity.
