Wiki

Biography

Kittie is a Canadian heavy metal band formed in London, Ontario, in 1996 by sisters Morgan Lander and Mercedes Lander and guitarist Fallon Bowman. The group emerged during the rise of nu metal but developed a harsher sound that combined alternative metal, groove metal, death metal, and later elements of metalcore. Morgan Lander became the band's vocalist and guitarist, while Mercedes established herself as its drummer. The sisters have remained Kittie's central creative and performing force through numerous lineup changes.

Kittie attracted early attention through independent recordings and live performances in Canada. The band's first demo, Sex Iz Hell, appeared in 1998, followed by a self-titled EP. A showcase at Canadian Music Week in 1999 helped secure a deal with NG Records and Artemis Records. Kittie's debut album, Spit, was recorded with producer Garth Richardson and released in 1999, reaching a wider audience in 2000.

Built around aggressive guitar riffs, shouted vocals, and Mercedes Lander's forceful drumming, Spit became one of the notable female-fronted metal releases of its era. The singles "Brackish" and "Charlotte" received significant exposure through rock radio and music television, while the album's confrontational presentation challenged the male-dominated image associated with much of the contemporary nu metal scene. Kittie toured extensively, including appearances alongside established heavy acts, and ultimately sold more than two million records worldwide through its independent and major-label releases.

The follow-up, Oracle (2001), expanded the band's sound with heavier arrangements and a more developed sense of atmosphere. After Bowman left the group, Kittie continued with changing lineups and released Until the End in 2004. The album emphasized the band's move away from its early nu metal associations toward a more direct and traditional modern-metal approach.

Kittie subsequently issued Funeral for Yesterday in 2007, In the Black in 2009, and I've Failed You in 2011. These records reflected a band increasingly focused on dense guitar work, darker themes, and more controlled songwriting. Bassist Ivana "Ivy" Jenkins became an important part of Kittie's later lineup, initially joining in 2007 and returning when the band resumed activity.

Following years of reduced activity, Kittie entered an extended hiatus after its 2010s touring period. The band returned to the stage in the early 2020s, with Jenkins rejoining Morgan and Mercedes Lander and guitarist Tara McLeod. Kittie premiered the song "Vultures" at the Sick New World festival in Las Vegas in 2023, marking its first new material in more than a decade. In 2024, the band signed with Sumerian Records and released Fire, its seventh studio album. The record preserved Kittie's abrasive metal identity while presenting a more mature and deliberately shaped version of the band's sound.

Kittie followed Fire with Spit XXV, a 2025 EP featuring new recordings of four songs from the debut album. Produced again by Richardson, the release connected the band's early work with its modern lineup. In 2026, Kittie marked its 30th anniversary with the Legacy of Fire Tour, its first full North American headline tour in more than a decade, followed by European dates. The band's career is defined by resilience, musical evolution, and its lasting role in broadening the visibility of women in contemporary heavy music.
