Keb' Mo' is the professional name of Kevin Roosevelt Moore, an American singer, guitarist, songwriter, arranger, and actor whose work connects Delta blues with contemporary roots, soul, folk, country, and pop. Born on October 3, 1951, in Compton, California, Moore developed as a musician in Los Angeles, where he initially worked in rhythm and blues and as a supporting guitarist rather than pursuing immediate solo fame.
At the age of 21, he joined the band of violinist Papa John Creach, a former member of Jefferson Airplane. The association brought Moore into contact with rock, jazz, and R&B audiences and led to appearances on several of Creach's albums. He later worked with the Rose Brothers and other Los Angeles ensembles. In 1980, he released the R&B-oriented album *Rainmaker* under his birth name, Kevin Moore, but the record appeared on Casablanca shortly before the label collapsed.
A major turning point came in the early 1990s. Moore played a Delta bluesman in the Los Angeles stage production *Rabbit Foot*, an experience that encouraged him to study slide guitar and explore the older blues tradition more deeply. He subsequently portrayed Robert Johnson in the documentary drama *Can't You Hear the Wind Howl?* Around the same period, he adopted the stage name Keb' Mo', a nickname given to him by drummer Quentin Dennard. His self-titled 1994 album introduced a carefully updated form of acoustic blues, combining original songs with versions of Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen" and "Kind Hearted Woman Blues."
His later albums broadened that approach. *Suitcase* (2006) and *The Reflection* (2011) emphasized polished songwriting and collaborations, while *BLUESAmericana* (2014) openly framed his music as a meeting point between blues and Americana. He also composed for television, including work connected with *Mike & Molly* and *Memphis Beat*, and appeared in projects such as Martin Scorsese's *The Blues*, *The West Wing*, *Honeydripper*, and *Sun Records*.
In 2017, Keb' Mo' joined forces with Taj Mahal for *TajMo*, a relaxed and celebratory collaboration that won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. His 2019 album *Oklahoma* addressed social and political tensions while retaining his characteristic balance of seriousness and accessibility; it won the Grammy for Best Americana Album. *Good To Be...* followed in 2022.
Keb' Mo' and Taj Mahal reunited for *Room on the Porch* in 2025. In 2026, Keb' Mo' released *The Breakdown*, a notably spare album built largely around voice and acoustic guitar. The record reflects a mature artist reducing his arrangements to their essentials while preserving the directness, resilience, and human warmth that have made him one of contemporary blues' most approachable figures.
