Biography

Julio Jose Iglesias de la Cueva (born September 23, 1943, in Madrid, Spain) is a Spanish singer and songwriter whose career helped make romantic Spanish-language pop a global commercial force. Known for his polished delivery, multilingual recordings, and sophisticated stage persona, Iglesias became one of the best-selling recording artists in music history. He has reportedly sold more than 300 million records worldwide, recording in 14 languages and building audiences across Europe, Latin America, Asia, and the United States.

Before entering music, Iglesias pursued two very different ambitions. He studied law and played soccer as a goalkeeper, including for Real Madrid's reserve side. His athletic career ended after a serious automobile accident in 1963 left him with a spinal injury. During his recovery, he learned to play guitar and began writing songs. The experience redirected his life toward music.

Iglesias won the 1968 Benidorm International Song Festival with "La vida sigue igual," a song he had written himself. The victory led to a recording contract and established him in Spain at a time when the country's popular music industry was beginning to reach a wider international market. He represented Spain at the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest with "Gwendolyne," finishing fourth. Although the contest did not make him an international star overnight, it strengthened his profile and encouraged him to work beyond the Spanish-speaking market.

Throughout the 1970s, Iglesias developed a style built around romantic ballads, soft orchestration, and an intimate vocal approach. Albums such as *Soy*, *A flor de piel*, and *El amor* expanded his audience, while songs including "Manuela," "Por el amor de una mujer," and "Me olvide de vivir" became central to his repertoire. His ability to move between Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, and English allowed him to enter markets that were often difficult for foreign-language singers to reach.

His greatest period of crossover success came in the 1980s. The album *De nina a mujer* was particularly successful in Japan and Latin America, while *1100 Bel Air Place* introduced him more decisively to English-speaking audiences. Released in 1984, it included "To All the Girls I've Loved Before," a duet with Willie Nelson that became one of Iglesias' signature international hits. He also recorded with artists such as Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, and Art Garfunkel, using collaborations to connect his romantic style with American pop, country, and adult contemporary music.

Iglesias' 1987 album *Un hombre solo* earned the Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance, confirming his standing in the rapidly expanding Latin music field. Later projects, including *Tango* and *Noche de cuatro lunas*, showed his continuing interest in adapting his sound to contemporary production while retaining his emphasis on melody and vocal phrasing. His 2006 album *Romantic Classics* revisited well-known English-language songs through the same elegant ballad style that had defined much of his career.

Beyond record sales, Iglesias became an important cultural ambassador for Spanish and Latin music. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, was named a UNICEF Special Ambassador for the Performing Arts, and was inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013. The Recording Academy presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. His influence rests less on musical experimentation than on his extraordinary international reach: Iglesias transformed the traditional romantic ballad into a broadly exportable pop language and made the Spanish-language singer a permanent presence on the world's mainstream stages.
