Juli is a German pop-rock band from Giessen, Hesse, whose combination of guitar-driven arrangements, emotionally direct lyrics and strong melodic hooks made them one of the defining groups of the German-language pop boom of the mid-2000s. The band's core lineup consists of singer Eva Briegel, guitarists Jonas Pfetzing and Simon Triebel, bassist Andreas "Dedi" Herde and drummer Marcel Roemer.
The group developed from Sunnyglade, a band formed in the mid-1990s by Herde, Triebel and Pfetzing. Sunnyglade initially performed in English and released a limited album, Pictures of My Mind, in 1998. Briegel and Roemer joined around 2000, completing the lineup that would later become Juli. The band won the Hessian Rock Prize in 2000 and secured a publishing deal with EMI Music Publishing in 2001.
During recording sessions in Berlin, the musicians became increasingly interested in German-language songwriting. They decided to abandon the Sunnyglade name and their existing material, starting again as Juli with a new repertoire. The name was taken from a song by musician Tex. After early showcases and a first appearance under the new name in 2002, Juli signed a record deal in 2003 and began preparing their debut album.
Juli's breakthrough came in 2004 with "Perfekte Welle." The single became a major success in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, reaching number two in the German singles chart and earning gold status. Its bright, anthemic sound and accessible lyrics placed Juli at the center of a renewed interest in German-language pop and rock, alongside bands such as Wir sind Helden and Silbermond. The song was temporarily removed from many radio playlists after the December 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia, because its references to waves acquired an unintended and uncomfortable association.
The debut album, Es ist Juli, followed in September 2004. It produced further successful singles, including "Geile Zeit," "Regen und Meer" and "Warum," and eventually sold more than 700,000 copies in Germany. In February 2005, Juli represented Hesse at the first Bundesvision Song Contest and won the competition with "Geile Zeit." The victory was followed by extensive touring, festival appearances and a performance at the Berlin edition of Live 8.
After the intensity of their early success, the band reduced its public activity and concentrated on its second album. Ein neuer Tag, released in October 2006, presented a more mature and reflective version of Juli's sound. The lead single, "Dieses Leben," entered the German top five, while the album became another major commercial success. Juli received the Bambi award for national music in 2006 and the Eins Live Krone for best band.
The later albums In Love (2010) and Insel (2014) showed the group moving between polished pop, rock and more atmospheric material. Juli increasingly worked at its own pace, with extended periods between releases. Their fifth studio album, Der Sommer ist vorbei, appeared on April 28, 2023. It combines large-scale rock production with melancholic indie-pop textures and reflects on time, change and the band's long history together. Tracks such as "Irgendwann," "Traurige Lieder" and "Die besten Dinge" underline Juli's continuing preference for emotionally open songwriting without abandoning the memorable choruses that first established their place in German pop.
